World War Z Movie Review
World War Z is a 2013 action film directed by Marc Forster and starring Brad Pitt. It’s a very mediocre blockbuster.

Out of nowhere, Gerry, an ex-United Nations employee, finds himself in a race against time as he investigates a threatening virus that turns humans into zombies. Based on the titular novel, this movie was a huge box office hit, being the highest-grossing zombie movie of all time. But it wasn’t a critical darling and I agree with most assessments that it’s a very weak film.
First off, as somebody who isn’t a fan of zombie stories, you would really need to do something very unique with the concept in order for me to enjoy it more, which this movie never did. It’s the most standard zombie story you can think of with the outbreak and post-apocalyptic tone throughout. It’s an inferior script for sure.
It’s also an action vehicle instead of being a horror feature, which bothered me quite a bit. The action set pieces are well executed, but too often the movie would just focus on overlong action scenes at the expense of meaningful plot or characterization. The result is a frenetic, boring mess of a film.
World War Z failed to develop any of its characters properly. None of them managed to stick out to me. Brad Pitt is charismatic in the main role, but this character was not worthy of his talents as an actor. He’s an underdeveloped bore. The other characters fared even worse and were such a waste.

The movie looked good due to solid effects, well executed action scenes and propulsive editing and pacing. The directing is serviceable and the score is solid. But the scrip is so slight, it is so hollow in characters and purpose, and it failed to engage me at any point.
World War Z is a very mediocre zombie movie that failed to do anything unique or interesting with the genre. The film looks and sounds solid. The action scenes are also well executed. But the frenetic pacing, slight plot and poor characterization prevented me from enjoying it more. Brad Pitt was so wasted here.
My Rating – 2.5
