Venom 3 Movie Review

Venom: The Last Dance is a 2024 superhero film directed by Kelly Marcel and starring Tom Hardy. It’s a fun final entry in the trilogy, but the weakest one for sure.

Venom 3 Movie Review

Eddie Brock and Venom must make a devastating decision as they’re pursued by a mysterious military man and alien monsters from Venom’s home world. I actually quite liked both the first and the second Venom movie and this one is inferior, but still passable entertainment. This franchise is very similar in all of its installments when it comes to its strengths and its pitfalls.

Once again, the main storyline is a very bad one. It involves Area 51 for some reason while being hurt by that typically frustrating third act chaos where so much happens, but nothing matters. It’s all noise and nonsense. None of the new actors made any impact whatsoever. Juno Temple and Chiwetel Ejiofor fared best, but even they were saddled with underdeveloped characters.

Where the movie shines is in the dynamic between Eddie and his symbiote. These moments are so incredibly entertaining and even endearing that I was left wondering why all of these movies aren’t just about their relationship primarily. They should have made these films as full on comedies, but of course these are superhero films, so they should have action scenes thrown in to satisfy fans. But they were underwhelming and the effects were quite weak too. The movie had that overly dark look to it that simply does not appeal to me.

Venom 3 Movie Review

But Venom 3 is a lot of fun in the aforementioned scenes where the two are just having fun. The family that they meet on the way are underutilized, but some moments with them are charming. Venom is hilarious here, especially in that one sequence where he is loving a certain song and having a blast singing along to it. Tom Hardy is very competent and funny as always and their dynamic is goofy in the best way possible. I just wished that that second act was the whole movie. That ending, though, was quite moving and satisfying.

Venom 3 is inferior to its predecessors, but it is still a lot of fun. Once again, the action is underwhelming, the effects are not great, and the overall plot is dumb, boring and uninspired. It is in the moments where Eddie and Venom are just fooling around and having fun where the movie truly came to life. Their dynamic is so infectiously endearing and entertaining that it left me wondering why this franchise wasn’t made to be a full on comedy instead.
