Twisters Movie Review

Twisters is a 2024 disaster film directed by Lee Isaac Chung and starring Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones. It’s a very overrated, disappointing sequel.

Kate Carter, a retired tornado-chaser and meteorologist, is persuaded to return to Oklahoma to work with a new team and new technologies. This movie is a sequel of sorts to the 1996 original, but it doesn’t have much to do with the original and is, in fact, a vastly inferior version of this story. Watching this movie I was taken aback by how mediocre it is. Why the critics judged it so positively is a mystery to me.

Much has been said about Glen Powell, mostly in glowing terms, but I continue to find his appeal baffling. He is charismatic for sure, but I find him to be annoying and arrogant. He is tailor-made for this type of blockbuster, but I simply do not find him to be charming enough to carry these roles. His character here is quite dull.

Daisy-Edgar Jones fared even worse. She was supposed to be this mix between the Paxton and Hunt characters from the previous film, but she simply did not have the gravitas of the two actors and her character was just not that interesting. Others fared even worse, even Anthony Ramos whose role was better than others, but still not engaging at all.

Twisters focuses so much on the characters instead of spectacle, which would be fine if any of these characters got proper development, but they did not. So, basically we have a movie that has a weak, uninspired plot and boring characters, but what about the action? It doesn’t have that either! It was so frustrating to witness a modern movie that has such weak action.

Twisters Movie Review

The thrills are almost non-existent. The effects are quite poor. The tornados in the first movie looked infinitely better than they looked here. I do realize that they went for a more realistic, dirty look, but it backfired as it led to a washed out aesthetic that was simply unappealing. The movie has some solid dialogue and fine character interactions. It’s also definitely not dumb in plot or scenarios. But it lacked the magic and the charm of the original throughout.

Twisters is an overrated, uninspired mess of a film. This sequel simply did not have either the thrill or the charm of the original. They focused so much on characters instead of spectacle, but the characters are all dull and the actors playing them forgettable. I continue to find Glen Powell’s appeal baffling as he is too cocky, uninteresting and bland. The overall plot and dialogue are fine, but the special effects are actually inferior this time around and the action was also lacking. They went for a more realistic, dirtier look, but it led to a washed out aesthetic that was thoroughly unappealing to me.
