The Bling Ring Movie Review
The Bling Ring is a 2013 crime film directed by Sofia Coppola and starring Emma Watson among many others. It’s a very flawed and slight, but engaging flick.

The lifestyle that everybody kinda wants“

Obsessed with fame and the lifestyles of celebrities, a group of teenagers keep track of famous celebrities using the Internet and social media so that they can rob their homes. Based on a true story, this film captured what happened, but Coppola failed to include any commentary. Maybe she did this on purpose, but this is the type of story that needed a moral message or two and the movie didn’t have any of it.
With that being said, it still worked due to very good and realistic dialogue, a surprisingly comedic tone at times that also worked, and strong acting performances. Israel Broussard and Taissa Farmiga fared the best and their characters were a bit more developed than others, but clearly the highlight is Emma Watson herself.
I was so glad to see her get more interesting roles after her Harry Potter era. This is where she showed us that she is a very talented actress as she went against type and delivered a terrific turn as the character that is unlike Hermione Granger and Watson herself. She obviously had a blast playing this ditzy, fame-obsessed girl and some of the best scenes and dialogue stemmed from her.

The Bling Ring is at its best when it’s focusing on the fun interactions between these dumb young girls, but it is at its worst when being repetitive, which did happen in the second act where most of the scenes went on for way too long. Coppola should have included more bits with their parents and the aftermath of their crime. The movie looks great, but it’s hardly deep.
The Bling Ring is a solid, though flawed Sofia Coppola-directed crime flick. The film is slight in plot and repetitious in structure, and she failed to include any commentary about its characters or their actions. But the movie is still a lot of fun due to strong and realistic dialogue, a solid visual style to it, and one stellar turn from Emma Watson, who went against type and was surprisingly believable as this ditzy, fame-obsessed girl.
My Rating – 3.5
