Sometimes I Think About Dying is a 2024 independent romantic drama film directed by Rachel Lambert and starring Daisy Ridley. It’s a very good movie.

A lonely and socially awkward woman tries to make a connection with a friendly new co-worker who takes her out on a date. This is a film about what it really means to be introverted. I did not at all relate to the protagonist’s disinterest and apathy toward anything and anybody, but I did relate to her social awkwardness and her aversion to small talk.
The movie really gets introverts. We don’t hate people. We just hate small talk and we carefully choose the people that we want to surround ourselves with. This is a very rare movie that got all of that. Through her interactions with others, you can see that she tries to talk to them, but she finds it difficult to talk about anything. Fran is a very well realized character and a different, interesting heroine for a movie.
Daisy Ridley was terrific in this role and she showed here that she has a lot of talent that hasn’t been used much until now. Hopefully, she gets more of these smaller indie roles in the future as she’s so good at them. I also really liked Dave Merheje in the role of Robert, her potential love interest. The two share some sort of connection, but their interactions are awkward and at times painful to watch.

Sometimes I Think About Dying is at its best when it’s focusing on their budding romance. The film paints their interactions with so much nuanced detail and care. The overall plot of the movie is paper thin, but because the characterization worked and the acting was excellent, the movie elevated those trappings with ease. I did not love the cinematography as some of the choices felt too odd and artsy just for the sake of it, but they did make this simple plot more ambitious. The overall directing and editing was very good here.
Sometimes I Think About Dying is a pretty good indie romantic drama that benefits from a stellar central turn from Daisy Ridley. She was so good here that hopefully she will get more meaningful dramatic roles in the future. The film’s plot is paper thin, but it’s elevated by strong acting, solid characterization and an interesting, different protagonist than usual. This is a rare movie that truly gets what it means to be introverted and just how painful small talk is for introverts.
