Plankton: The Movie Movie Review
Plankton: The Movie is a 2025 animated musical comedy film that was released on Netflix. It’s one of the best SpongeBob movies so far.
Plankton’s tangled love story with his sentient computer wife goes sideways when she takes a stand and decides to destroy the world without him. This is the second spin-off feature released on Netflix after the last maligned effort that remains the nadir of the franchise. But this might actually be the best movie in the series due to it being so much fun and so well conceived.

Plankton has always been one of my favorite characters on the show and I was delighted that he got his own movie to shine. And he was very entertaining here as we got to see his backstory and how much Karen actually means to him. Karen is a badass villain in this flick and the two shared such a fun dynamic that was so well explored. Whenever the two were together on screen the film was a hoot.
Those flashbacks are so good that I wished to have seen more of them. They were shot in vintage styles from previous decades and the best one was the childhood flashback that was a 30s style black-and-white musical. That brings me to the soundtrack – it’s surprisingly good! That rock tune that Plankton belts out is so catchy and most of the numbers are unexpectedly fun and exciting.
Plankton: The Movie has a basic, but serviceable story. It worked within the context of this franchise and these two characters, but it’s clearly more intended for fans than newcomers. While these two got great arcs, the other characters left a lot to be desired. SpongeBob, Patrick and others are definitely there, but they get very little to do and Plankton being frenemies instead of enemies with them was odd. The animation is very polished, but it is still inferior to the original show, especially in weak character designs.

Whereas the Sandy movie was the nadir of the franchise, Plankton: The Movie is easily the best SpongeBob film released so far. While it’s strictly for the fans, the supporting characters were forgettable and the animation lackluster, the soundtrack is surprisingly strong, the flashbacks are so much fun, and both Plankton and Karen got terrific arcs. It’s not a great movie, but it’s a very entertaining one, and it’s the only film in the series to rival the original show itself.
My Rating – 4
