Madame Web Movie Review
Madame Web is a 2024 superhero film directed by S. J. Clarkson and starring Dakota Johnson in the titular role. It’s one of the silliest superhero flicks out there.

Cassandra Webb is a New York City paramedic who starts to show signs of clairvoyance. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she must protect three young women from a mysterious adversary who wants them dead. Sony’s Spider-Man Universe continues its downward spiral toward demise as is expected from a universe where Spider-Man himself is absent and we are left with disposable secondary characters from his stories. This might be the worst movie yet from this universe, a film that was universally reviled by both audiences and critics.
Watching this film I had a distinct sense of seeing something from the early 2000s. The movie is set in 2003 and it felt like that in setting and in tone as well as approach. It’s so dated when compared to other films in the genre made these days, though I would have to say that some of its old-fashioned elements were charming to me, especially that earnest tone and silly humor.
Dakota Johnson obviously did not like being on the set of this movie and it shows in every single scene. This is such a lazy performance form somebody who is actually far from a bad actress. She phoned it in and delivered one of the campiest and silliest main actor performances in a superhero film ever. Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced and Celeste O’Connor are also here, but they individually were quite badly developed, though as a group I found all of these ladies to be at least fun in their interplay.

Madame Web features terrible villains, the main one being particularly bad. The entire storyline is horrendously executed, being just an origin story that was hazily written and approached. The dialogue is actually hilarious at times how ridiculous and badly delivered it is, leading to the movie approaching camp territory at times, which at least made it fun to watch. Technically speaking, it sounds and looks bad. It was an obviously rushed product that had no potential to ever be good.
Madame Web has been trashed by both critics and audiences and I definitely agree that it’s a very bad movie. This is one of the worst superhero movies released so far, one that is set in the early 2000s, but it felt like that in approach and tone, making it seem instantly dated. Dakota Johnson was horribly miscast in the role and her acting was horrendous. The screenplay is terrible and the villains are atrocious. There is certainly some fun to be had in the humorous line delivery that reached camp territory at times, but at the end of the day this movie had no potential to ever be good.
My Rating – 2
