His Three Daughters Movie Review
His Three Daughters is a 2024 indie drama film directed by Azazel Jacobs and starring Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne and Elizabeth Olsen. It’s a pretty solid, but flawed indie.

It’s good that there are three of you“

Three distant sisters reunite in NYC to care for their sick father. Tensions rise as they confront past issues, aiming to heal family bonds amid laughter and tears. This is one of those movies that easily could have been a stage play. The film failed to break away from its stagey feel as it’s set in just one apartment and it was never particularly cinematic. The directing from Jacobs is just fine, but far from truly great.
His Three Daughters is worth seeing for the performances alone. All three of these actresses played three very different women, all being believable and grounded in reality. Carrie Coon is very good, Elizabeth Olsen is quite moving and Natasha Lyonne delivered a surprisingly strong performance in a rare dramatic role for her.
When the story focused on all three being together and arguing or bonding, the movie soared, but otherwise it was never as engaging. I needed more scenes with the father and a stronger setup as the first half is somewhat rushed while the second half is more familiar and been there, done that in its plot points.

This is one of those relatable movies for anyone who has ever lost a parent, but it never was all that emotional to me as its tone was not as warm as you’d think from this type of story. It wasn’t emotionally manipulative also, which is what I appreciated about it. The dialogue is pretty good and realistic. The characters also worked. But the plot left a lot to be desired and the pacing was too slow.
His Three Daughters is a solid indie drama that is worth seeing for the performances alone – Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne and Elizabeth Olsen were all excellent in well fleshed out roles. The dynamic between them and the dialogue were great, but the film otherwise had a standard plot, it lacked in cinematic qualities and it felt awfully stagey throughout.
My Rating – 3.5
