Freddy vs. Jason Movie Review
Freddy vs. Jason is a 2003 slasher film directed by Ronny Yu and starring Monica Keena and Robert Englund. It’s a ridiculous, but rather diverting flick.

Freddy is losing power, so he resurrects Jason to terrorize the people of Springwood. But Jason starts intruding on Freddy’s territory and this eventually leads to a stand-off between the two villains. I have to say that I expected more from this movie. I know, expecting a lot from a film called Freddy vs. Jason was foolish from me, but at least I wanted more entertainment. And I got a lot of it, but still more could have been done with its killer premise.
This is one of those movies that focuses more on people fighting these villains instead of villains fighting against each other. Think of ‘Alien vs. Predator’ for instance. And that was a letdown as the villains are much more interesting than these dumb humans. And I say humans because this film clearly establishes that both Freddy and Jason are immortal, which rendered their fighting pointless. The eventual ending was a hilariously campy wink to the audience.
Freddy is the brain and Jason is the brawn. This led to their duels focusing on strength versus smarts. The bulk of them involved too much slashing and ripping off flash, but a couple of more innovative moments involved Freddy using numerous props and weapons and even invading his psyche. This is where we get Jason’s origin story, which was quite interesting.

Freddy vs. Jason started as an Elm Street movie first and ended more as a Friday the 13th movie. Given that the former is much better than the letter, this turned out to be a lackluster Freddy movie and a pretty solid Jason flick. I have to say that Monica Keena was pretty good in the main hero role, but her character was quite forgettable. Others are even worse and totally disposable. The movie has a fun soundtrack that is quite pulpy, but the cinematography is too dark and mediocre while the directing is mediocre.
Freddy vs. Jason is an expectedly ridiculous entry for both of these franchises that pitted these villains against each other, but the end result could have been more entertaining overall. The other characters were quite mediocre and the overall plot was weak, but at least the fight scenes were quite diverting and that ending was hilariously campy.
My Rating – 2.5
