Exodus: Gods and Kings Movie Review

Exodus: Gods and Kings is a 2014 biblical epic film directed by Ridley Scott and starring Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton. It’s a very mediocre take on an oft told tale.

After learning of his true lineage, Moses rises against Pharaoh Ramesses II to help the Hebrews escape from Egypt. He faces several challenges and is strongly opposed by Ramesses. ‘The Ten Commandments’ is one of the best epic movies ever released, so this movie was rendered unnecessary the very moment that it was announced. And the final product surely ranks among the director’s weakest efforts.

I am sick and tired of Hollywood using CGI on these historical tales and spectacles. Even the pyramids are computer-generated in this awfully polished and artificial in look film. It should have been shot much more interestingly and cinematically. These spectacle scenes worked to a degree, especially the plague sequences that were suitably epic and intense. But the parting of the sea and other famous moments fared much worse and obviously inferior to the aforementioned classic.

The score by Alberto Iglesias is spectacular, rousing and easily the best aspect of the entire production. So, I would say that it’s worth seeing for the music and those action scenes only. Everything else was sadly subpar. The dialogue was uninteresting and boring while the characterization was horrid. Not a single person was properly adapted here, so we ended up not being able to root for or empathize with any of them.

Exodus, thus, felt like a computerized and frenetic take on this classic story that lacked any human, meaningful or emotional components. Christian Bale was rather tedious in the main role as he can often be in these types of movies. Edgerton fared better, but their dynamic was simply not as engaging as it needed to have been. The others were even less memorable in this movie that simply didn’t care to develop its plot and characters properly. Scott’s directing is so lazy and misguided here that it came as quite a disappointment, especially in comparison to something like ‘Kingdom of Heaven’. He clearly phoned it in here.

Exodus is one of Ridley Scott’s worst movies. While it is suitably epic in certain scenes (particularly the plague ones) and beautifully scored by Alberto Iglesias, the movie was not well shot at all as it felt too dark with a heavy use of unnecessary CGI. The film is overlong, boring and lacking strong dialogue, acting and characterization as the plot just went through the motions. It was such a mess.
