28 Weeks Later Movie Review

28 Weeks Later is a 2007 zombie horror film directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and starring Robert Carlyle among many others. It’s another weak entry in this overrated franchise.

When an incurable virus starts killing people in Britain, they are forced to evacuate their homes. All hell breaks loose when they try to return to their country and are again attacked by the virus. This sequel was not directed by Danny Boyle, but instead by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, a person whose work I am not familiar with. Overall, his directing proved to be pretty good here and quite kinetic.

The acting is also strong as the movie features a tremendous cast of performers. It is always great seeing Robert Carlyle in anything, and although this is far from his best works, he was reliably terrific regardless. Rose Byrne and Jeremy Runner got much less to do, but they served their purpose. None of the characters that these actors played were properly developed, thus they were all wasted on these poor roles.

28 Weeks Later gets extra props for actually negatively depicting NATO and how incompetent they are, but the story became way too nihilistic for my taste toward the end. The first film was already pretty grim, but this one was even more depressing. There is simply no need to be constantly this dark, which is something that modern filmmakers simply do not understand.

It looked a bit better all things considered, but still the franchise favors “realism” in favor of actually strong and cinematic technical aspects. The score and cinematography are quite mediocre here and the pacing is also problematic. I appreciated that there was more story and dialogue here instead of constant, gory action, which is why I preferred it ultimately over the original, but still this franchise is simply not for me.
