The Nun II (2023)

The Nun II Movie Review
The Nun II is a 2023 supernatural horror film directed by Michael Chaves and starring Taissa Farmiga and Storm Reid. It’s a weak movie that has its memorable scares.
In 1956 France, a priest is violently murdered, and Sister Irene begins to investigate. She once again comes face-to-face with a powerful evil. The original Nun movie was the weakest entry in The Conjuring universe by a mile. It was like theme park ride – fun and well crafted, but empty on the inside. This sequel fares better, but not by much.

My main issue with this subseries of movies is the storytelling and dialogue. There is so much exposition in this movie that the end result was a tiresome plot that was over-explained, dull and annoying. There is not a single plot point here that either wasn’t predictable or was memorable in any shape or form. The dialogue is at times laughably poor and cringe-worthy.
The same goes for the characterization. None of these characters get proper development and they’re a far cry from The Warrens, let’s just say that. While I did appreciate the very strong performance from Taissa Farmiga, her character still left a lot to be desired in terms of a memorable arc. Storm Reid also suffered from a badly written role, though her acting was quite good.
The Nun II is worth seeing for the scares. There are a couple of scenes here that were very effective how well executed they were in terms of memorable location work, jump scares and creepy imagery. The titular character at least got more to do in this sequel as she was sidelined in the original way too much.

All of the scenes with her were terrific. A couple of set pieces were genuinely striking and quite eerie while the violence was over-the-top, but the stakes were raised significantly due to a high body count. The look of the film is pleasingly Gothic while its atmosphere is wonderfully old-fashioned. It’s also a well lit and scored flick with strong sound effects. I just wish the plot and characterization were better.
The Nun II fared better than its predecessor due to some memorable scares that were genuinely well executed and fun. The production design, cinematography and acting were all pretty good while the Gothic atmosphere was very pleasing. The problems here once again lie in the plot that was very thin, characterization that was almost non-existent, and dialogue that was quite poor and full of tiresome exposition.
