Seed of Chucky Movie Review
Seed of Chucky is a 2004 black comedy slasher film directed by Don Mancini and starring Jennifer Tilly and Brad Dourif. It is a mediocre, but entertaining movie.

I killed that bitch 20 years ago and she still won’t shut up!“

Glen visits Hollywood after learning that a movie is being made on the life of his dead parents, Chuck and Tiff. He then resurrects them to know them better but they succumb to their murderous ways. ‘The Bride of Chucky’ started this comedic and highly campy trend in the Child’s Play series by giving Chucky a wife doll and creating a lot of mayhem in the proceedings. I really enjoyed that movie, but this sequel is surely inferior.
The reason why this one doesn’t work as well lies in its messy execution. While its predecessor was campy, it was also more streamlined and focused. This flick is anything but that. We have the two dolls but also their kid (or kids) and a lot of family drama and murderous mayhem. It was all just too much.
This is clearly more of a comedy than a horror movie as the horror scenes do not work. They were brutal, but the kills were also too sensational and ridiculous to be taken seriously let alone scare anybody. This is so far removed from the first entry that it is difficult to believe that they are one and the same franchise.
The family drama worked much better as it was quite funny at times due to the characters being a lot of fun. Chucky is so funny here, but it is Jennifer Tilly that killed it once again with so many funny one-liners and a very amusing self-parodic storyline that really worked.

With that being said, Seed of Chucky also introduced the kid character and he/she simply did not work. I appreciate the fact that they included a transgender subplot, but it did not fit the overall narrative and it was just there to honor Ed Wood and nothing more than that.
Seed of Chucky is an inferior sequel to a much better movie that was more streamlined and less messy. This one has a very funny family drama at its center with the two dolls being hilarious once again, but the kid doll character did not work, and the horror elements are ridiculous and not effective at all. This flick tried to deal with too much story, making for a chaotic and silly sequel.
My Rating – 2.5
