Ferrari Movie Review

Ferrari is a 2023 biographical sports drama directed by Michael Mann and starring Adam Driver and Penelope Cruz. It’s an uneven, but well made movie.

During the summer of 1957, bankruptcy looms over the company that Enzo Ferrari and his wife built 10 years earlier. He decides to roll the dice and wager it all on the iconic Mille Miglia, a treacherous race across Italy. This is one of those biopics that focus on just one part of a person’s life, this one focusing on Enzo’s one important race, accident and his struggles with bankruptcy. The racing scenes are pretty good, though not as exhilarating as they should have been.

As for the dramatic scenes, I did not care about Enzo or what happened to him whatsoever. The main problem here was Adam Driver as he repeated his annoying Italian accent from ‘House of Gucci’ once again. His character lacked depth and Driver’s performance was only okay.

The movie is worth seeing, however, for Penelope Cruz alone. She plays his frustrated, angry wife impeccably well. She disappeared into the role and she was magnetic in all of her scenes, easily stealing the movie from Driver himself. Their arguments were the highlights and Cruz was particularly fantastic in her very emotive facial expressions.

Ferrari develops that central relationship surprisingly well and whenever the two are together on the screen, the film truly came alive. The other stuff felt subpar in comparison, though it was competently made across the board. Michael Mann’s directing was pretty good, the editing was also strong and the movie was well shot and scored. I just wished that it wasn’t as slow as it was, which is an odd choice for a biopic about a racer.

Michael Mann’s Ferrari is worth seeing for the performance of Penelope Cruz alone. She was magnetic whenever she was on screen, easily stealing the movie from Adam Driver himself. He was okay, but his Italian accent was terrible and very annoying. The movie overall is your standard biopic that failed to properly develop its main character, but it’s competently made across the board. It needed quicker pacing, but the cinematography and directing were solid.

My Rating – 3.5
