Yes-People (2020)
Yes-People Review
Yes-People is a 2020 Icelandic animated short film that was nominated for an Oscar. It’s quite goofy.
This strange film follows a bunch of people just doing their daily activities such as eating, exercising, having sex, going to school, working etc. All of these activities are followed by the titular “yes” proclamation. Hearing the Icelandic word “ja” repeated throughout in different tones, contexts and connotations produced a very amusing result, especially in the annoyed expressions.
It’s a quirky movie that is very amusing and even funny in certain scenes, but it gets repetitive and one-note afterward with a distinct lack of more ideas and versatility in its storytelling and themes. It’s by far the silliest and emptiest Oscar nominee this year in the category, but it’s undeniably entertaining when all is said and done. The animation is also very distinctive with the emphasis on the ugly parts of the human body producing hilarious results.
