Worst Films of 2024 List

Worst Films of 2024

2024 was a pretty good year for movies, featuring a bunch of films that I will fondly remember years from now. But every year has its fair share of trash and this one had quite a number of rotten films. This list represents the nadir of the year across different genres and mediums, so here we go.

5. Kinds of Kindness

Kinds of Kindness is such a poor movie. Apparently, Lanthimos’ last film was just an anomaly or even worse a fluke as here he continued all of his worst tendencies as a filmmaker – his utter lack of humanity, misanthropy, nihilism and weirdness for the sake of weirdness. It wasted all of its great actors on such a bad script. This movie was shot on a budget, so it even lacked the artistry of his previous project. It’s a pointless endeavor only meant to appeal to the critics and the director’s die-hard fans and a clear reminder that Lanthimos is extremely hit-or-miss.

4. Joker 2

Joker 2 is what happens when you are in the Hollywood snowflake bubble, so you decide to destroy any goodwill that you got before and disrespect your own fans. This is what Todd Phillips effectively did here as the plot and characterization of this movie is a giant middle finger to all audiences. That is the worst offender here, but other offences include the fact that this is a musical and the numbers are so badly filmed, and the fact that Lady Gaga was so mistreated and sidelined throughout. It’s a pointless, tedious sequel that doesn’t even succeed in the meta context. Nobody had expected that this would be on any worst list, but sadly that happened.

3. The Garfield Movie

The Garfield Movie is easily the worst animated film of the year. It has a bland visual style to it, terrible characterization and a truly horrible script. Garfield should be a lazy cat who doesn’t want to move often, but here he gets to go on an action-packed adventure, which makes for one of the worst cases of character assassination you can think of.  It’s your standard action/heist cartoon with nothing interesting or fresh to offer. The trailer had the only good scene in the eventual movie that, thus, isn’t worth seeing.

2. Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver

Oh, what a surprise. A Rebel Moon movie got on this list once again. The second entry might be even worse than the original. The bombastic action, frenetic pacing and terrible characterization were its main issues while the poor, overly familiar plot and a tiresome third act did not help matters either. We get so few of these epic SF films, so this franchise being so bad is inexcusable. Snyder is planning to make even more of these movies, which just goes to show that he has zero self-awareness of his work.

1. Madame Web

Madame Web has been trashed by both critics and audiences and I definitely agree that it’s a very bad movie. This is one of the worst superhero movies released so far, one that is set in the early 2000s, but it felt like that in approach and tone, making it seem instantly dated. Dakota Johnson was horribly miscast in the role and her acting was horrendous. The screenplay is terrible and the villains are atrocious. There is certainly some fun to be had in the humorous line delivery that reached camp territory at times, but at the end of the day this movie had no potential to ever be good. This is the rare year when most audiences and critics should unanimously agree on which movie is the worst one of the year as Madame Web is objectively terrible across the board.

Honorable Mentions:

A Complete Unknown – I wanted so hard to put this mediocrity on the list, but it gets an honorable mention. This is one of those pointless music biopics that are just meant to boost the egos of everyone involved and chase awards. It has no plot to it and it’s basically a non-movie.

I Saw the TV Glow – I do get why some people like this movie, but I have no patience for self-proclaimed arthouse cinema that is too ambiguous to ever stand firmly for anything.

Despicable Me 4 – Very weakly plotted and not all that fun, this sequel ranks as the worst entry in this franchise yet. It’s so weak that it should have been a television show instead of a movie.
