Worst Films of 2017
2017 was a pretty fantastic cinematic year and thus not a lot of movies I’ve seen are truly bad. As I mostly only watch well reviewed movies then, as was the case with last year, this list is synonymous with overrated movies. Only one movie here is pretty bad with the rest being mediocre. So here are five worst films of 2017 with three honorable mentions.
5. Darkest Hour
This is unfortunately not the only Best Picture nominee on this list and it is truly baffling how the Academy continues to nominate such weak films for their most prestigious prize. Darkest Hour is just your regular Oscar bait, but it is worse than most as it’s so obvious in its goal that it becomes laughable with all of the inspirational speeches and Oscar bait acting performances.
4. American Made
Tom Cruise has had a tough time lately with his choice of movies and this is the worst one I’ve seen from him so far. It’s just your regular crime biopic that, although very well filmed, is just incredibly boring to watch as it is rushed in approach and thus never exploring its real life figure and his story properly.
3. The Square
The Square is the only Oscar nominated foreign flick this year that I disliked as it truly is extremely annoying. This Swedish flick from Ruben Ostlund is immensely disappointing from his caliber and it’s one of those pretentious movies that seem smart in tone and approach, but are never really smart. It’s also just weird for the sake of being weird. A very annoying, unpleasant film.
2. A Ghost Story
A Ghost Story is one of those “meditative” movies which are about nothing at all and are just weird and slow for the sake of being weird and slow (you see the pattern forming in this list). Yes, it was a great idea on paper, but in execution it is so dull to watch and so pointless overall that it’s a giant waste of anyone’s talents here and the viewers’ precious time.
1. Phantom Thread
And the worst 2017 film I’ve seen is easily Phantom Thread. I dislike Paul Thomas Anderson’s films for the most part and this is another one of his pretentious bores. Not only is the film dull and slow, but also ludicrous in its plot and especially in its ridiculous, unrealistic twist. Vicky Krieps did not manage to save this film with her strong performance as nothing could. It’s an entire waste on all fronts and such a frustratingly beloved film.
Honorable Mentions:
Ferdinand – Ferdinand was also Oscar nominated and the Academy really made some horrible choices this year. This animated flick is good for kids only as its over-reliance on stupid sidekicks and non-stop action is bound to bore everyone over the age of ten.
Logan Lucky – This film from Steven Soderbergh has so-so performance and a dull plot. It also treats Americans from the South in a very ignorant manner.
All the Money in the World – This Ridley Scott film is very poorly edited and directed and, although well acted, it did not explore its interesting themes and story at all.
