Wide Open Spaces (1947)
Wide Open Spaces Review
Wide Open Spaces is a 1947 animated short film produced by Disney. It is a pretty solid, but standard flick.
Unable to stay in a motel overnight, Donald sleeps in the wild, having trouble with his air mattress. This is one of those Donald Duck shorts where he is in nature being frustrated by nuisances, in this instance the frustration being the air mattress. The animation is stellar and I loved the darker colors of the night. Donald is quite amusing himself and very endearing.
But the movie felt somewhat forgettable in its gags that are pretty straightforward and familiar. None of these gags were genuinely terrific. The mattress wasn’t enough of a nuisance to sustain an entire short in my opinion. It needed more variety when all is said and done.
