Tortoise Wins by a Hare (1943)
Tortoise Wins by a Hare Review
Tortoise Wins by a Hare is a 1943 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a very funny short.
This film is a sequel to ‘Tortoise Beats Hare’ and it beats that film in terms of quality pretty easily. The film has its problems such as the unexplained motif of the bunny mob as well as the fact that Bugs Bunny acts more as Daffy Duck here, but still seeing him frustrated and angry throughout the film provided a lot of strong comedy. The film is fast paced and very funny throughout.
It was so funny how Cecil Turtle fooled him so easily. He is very conniving and bright here whereas Bugs is uncharacteristically stupid, but it works in the context of the story and it leads to many funny sequences. The ending is overly brutal, but I still found the mob stopping Bugs to win very funny and that disguise sequence is excellent. The animation is also superb.
Tortoise Wins by a Hare is a strong sequel with uncharacteristically frustrated, but still funny Bugs Bunny and interestingly very conniving Cecil Turtle.
