Top Ten Will & Grace Characters
Will & Grace has had a bunch of characters throughout its run, both celebrity cameos and supporting characters, mostly love interests. Although most of the latter ones are less interesting, some are memorable, and the celebrities were very well used. Still, the main characters and some of their rivals are the heart and soul of this show. Without further ado, here are my top ten picks for the best characters on this sitcom.
10. Malcolm Widmark
Alec Baldwin is a comedic force when it comes to portraying overly narcissistic, sexy and confident middle-aged men, so him playing as Karen’s love interest and a flame with whom she cheated on Stanley was a great fit for the show. The two had a terrific, hilarious sexual banter that I truly wish the show chose them as a couple for the conclusion.
9. Marilyn Truman
The parents are mostly quite memorable on this show, especially the ones who appear a lot, the parents of Will and Grace. The most memorable one has to be Will’s mother, Marilyn. She is such a cold bitch that it was hilarious witnessing her constant insults directed toward Grace in particular. She’s savage and very amusing.
8. Val Bassett
One of the rare characters from the latter half of the show that ended up on this list, Val Bassett deserves this inclusion as she’s wonderfully over-the-top and truly crazy as this rival and neighbor of Grace. Some of the best shenanigans in the later seasons are found in her fun, soap opera level schemes.
7. Vince D’Angelo
I really like Vince. He’s such a great guy and a wonderful soul that the show was never the same without him. He was the perfect boyfriend for Will as the dynamic between them was very endearing. Will later on unfortunately never found a more memorable and interesting boyfriend, which was a huge problem for the last couple of seasons.
6. Rosario Salazar
The heart and soul maybe of the entire show is Rosario Salazar, the beloved maid of Karen Walker. The two bickered to no end, but at the end of the day they were great friends who respected each other tremendously. Their dynamic was infectious and very funny. Her funeral still remains one of the most heartbreaking moments on the entire series.
5. Beverley Leslie
Clearly belonging in the upper echelon of hilarious characters is this gay gnome of a man. Beverley Leslie is not only a fabulous rival of Karen, but he’s also hilarious by himself alone as this closeted, but clearly flamboyant and campy older man who likes the company of young black men whom he calls his business associates. He unfortunately appeared only scarcely, but whenever he was on screen, we were bound to laugh hysterically.
4. Grace Adler
There is no doubt about it – the titular characters are the boring parts of the main foursome. Thus, they got the inferior spots. It was tough deciding between the two, but I ultimately went with Grace as she changed less throughout the show’s run. Still, she is relatable for how messy her life choices and decisions continued to be through and through, and she’s clearly a highly realistic character as this woman who never quite got her life together.
3. Will Truman
All that I have said above also applies here, but Will grew a bit more than Grace, so that is why I had to include him in a higher spot than her. Also, for a gay show first and foremost that was meant to acquaint viewers with gay people and their issues, Will is the relatable one of the two main gay men – he’s grounded, complicated and very believable. His romantic life and his relationship with Grace were both very well explored.
2. Jack McFarland
Who doesn’t love this goofball? Yes, Jack can be annoying and insensitive, but he is also a beloved comedic character as this overgrown man-child full of insecurities. His friendship with Will is both moving and toxic in their competitiveness, but his friendship with Karen is the most entertaining dynamic of the entire show as the two are glorious together. It was also very funny following his doomed acting career and many other silly jobs that he had. Over-the-top and plain dumb, he’s a great comic relief for sure.
1. Karen Walker
Of course, Karen gets the much deserved number one choice. This goes without saying as she’s simply a hilarious creation. She remains incredibly funny throughout all these years as a constant provider of the best comedy on the entire show. Whenever she was on screen, she was bound to crack me up with her racist remarks, her classist stories and her sexual escapades. Her dynamic with everyone on this show is great, but the funniest ones are with Rosario, Beverley and very amusing Smitty. She is the high-and-mighty queen of Will & Grace.
