Top Ten The Police Songs
The Police was an English rock band that was at the height of their powers in the late seventies and early eighties. The band produced a couple of classic, timeless songs that are still very popular, but also a couple of lesser-known numbers that need more attention. This is the list of my personal favorite songs from The Police where I disregarded the general consensus.
10. King of Pain
King of Pain gets the tenth spot, which is controversial as the song is very respected. I also respect it for its memorable beat and excellent singing and lyrics, but those are also very depressing, making for an acquired taste admittedly so.
9. Spirits in the Material World
This number isn’t as respected, but I personally find it quite fun and very underrated. The chorus is very memorable and the song has a very otherworldly quality to its lyrics and overall tone. It needs more attention for sure.
8. Invisible Sun
Most of what I said for the tenth entry also applies here. It’s a very well sung, dark number that isn’t really fun for regular listening, but it is admittedly superbly written and quite memorable in its central refrain.
7. De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da
By far the most underrated song on this list along with my runner-up is this highly amusing number that is among the catchiest that the band has produced. The entirety of it is very well sung and quite fun, but clearly the standout is its extremely entertaining refrain.
6. Wrapped Around Your Finger
Wrapped Around Your Finger is one of the slower Police songs, but still an effective piece of music as the main beat is quite strong, the singing is excellent and the lyrics are as usual for the band very well written. It’s also the most romantic song of this bunch.
5. Roxanne
I do not particularly care for Roxanne. Most critics regard it as the best Police song almost unanimously, but I find it somewhat repetitive and not that memorable in its chorus as the other sections of the song in this instance are better and more fun.
4. Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic
One of only a couple of purely romantic and fun numbers that the band produced is Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, and obviously it went on to be a huge hit. It is still listened to regularly. Although a slight affair for sure, it is reasonably diverting, charming and undeniably fun.
3. Message in a Bottle
Message in a Bottle is one of the most respected of the band’s songs and for a great reason. Not only is it very well written and memorable in its imagery, but it’s also gorgeously sung and it has an infectious central beat that is quite memorable.
2. Don’t Stand So Close to Me
Don’t Stand So Close to Me is by far the most underrated song by The Police. It’s a number that starts out slow, but then leads to a great crescendo. All of it is very well sung, superbly performed and especially terrific in its chorus that is undeniably easy to listen to many times without getting bored of it.
1. Every Breath You Take
And the number one song by The Police has to be Every Breath You Take. Critics would make you think otherwise, but audiences have spoken and this remains undoubtedly their most popular song. It is easy to see why as the song is striking in whatever message you get from it: either the romantic or the sinister one. It’s so well sung, composed and not only is the refrain compelling, but the beginning is instantly iconic as well and the whole beat is beautiful.
