Top Ten SpongeBob SquarePants Characters
SpongeBob SquarePants is one of those shows that only has a limited number of characters, both in terms of main and supporting players. Thus, making this list was very easy for me and every single spot was obvious in my head. So here are ten best SpongeBob characters ranked.
10. Pearl
Pearl gets the worst spot on this list because she is your regular spoiled teenage girl who is into parties and hanging out. Still, her being a whale made for some interesting storylines and her relationship with her father, Eugene Krabs, was very well explored throughout.
9. Gary
Gary the Snail is the pet of SpongeBob’s. He mostly got the typical pet episodes on the show, but some were undeniably excellent. I liked his design and that he meowed like a cat. He’s a simple character, but it was great that the cartoon included a pet so extensively.
8. Karen
Who doesn’t love Karen? The computer wife of Plankton’s, she is hilarious in her every line of dialogue. Whenever she appeared, she was bound to scold the little villain, and I lived for it every single time. Their dynamics were infectious and so amusing.
7. Mrs. Puff
Although she only got the great episodes very early on, Mrs. Puff is by far the best supporting character on this show. It was easy to root for her as SpongeBob made her insane with his horrible driving skills, plus the revelation about her history was very interesting and funny.
6. Patrick
Yes, I do find Patrick to be the weakest of all the main characters. His friendship with SpongeBob is very sweet and endearing, but I am simply tired of these incredibly dumb cartoon characters who are mostly too one-note for me. He can be fun, but mostly he’s just annoying.
5. Sandy
Sandy also got the short end of the stick later down the line unfortunately, but in the first couple of seasons she shined as this very unique character. As the only land animal in an underwater town, she is different and it was very interesting seeing her backstory and her way of living. She’s also a genuinely great, fun person and a great friend to SpongeBob.
4. Plankton
Plankton is the quintessential character on this cartoon as the only true villain in it. And I loved how he is this classic cartoon villain who has his quest and he won’t stop at nothing to get the Krabby Patty secret formula. He was humanized a bit at times, but mostly he remained firm in his goal. He is theatrical, very entertaining and his relationship with Mr. Krabs is brilliantly realized.
3. SpongeBob
Although not the best character on the show, SpongeBob is the main character and an essential part of this Nickelodeon comedy. He is interesting for being an adult who still acts very much like a child. His obsession with his job was continuously fun to see while his interactions with everybody else are incredibly memorable and the highlight of the show.
2. Mr. Krabs
Mr. Krabs is this instantly iconic cartoon character as this crab who is obsessed with business and money. His materialistic drive led to many hilarious moments throughout all of his episodes and he is one of the two truly adult characters on the show as he provides mature humor that adults can enjoy, thus he is indispensable.
1. Squidward
Easily the greatest SpongeBob SquarePants character of them all, Squidward Tentacles remains the crux of most of the cartoon’s best episodes. His grumpy, pessimistic and downer outlook on life contrasted perfectly with everybody else, especially SpongeBob, leading to many classic, hilarious situational comedy episodes that all worked splendidly. He is just so much fun.
