Top Ten Most Anticipated Films of 2022
2022 is going to be a terrific year for game adaptations and superhero movies, but also some interesting indies and as well as some great returns to beloved franchises. These are ten movies that I am personally anticipated the most along with three honorable mentions.
10. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
The only reason why this one gets the last spot despite me absolutely loving the original movie is that it features multiple other MCU staple characters. Once again, they have an issue of having too many characters and plot points, but as the newest Spidey movie has shown – a multiverse story can be very cool when done right, so I’m definitely looking forward to that.
9. Turning Red
The trailed for this next Pixar project promised a lot of quirky comedy and family drama at its core. The core conceit is terrific and the movie’s new cultural angle for Pixar will undoubtedly make it intriguing and fresh. Let’s just hope that it is genuinely emotional and not manipulative in that regard.
8. Death on the Nile
For various reasons, the new Death on the Nile movie has been delayed numerous times. I hope that now finally we will be able to see it. I love Branagh and what he did with ‘Orient Express’, so I am definitely keeping my eye on this one too.
7. Scream
The new Scream movie has already been released and it received very strong reviews, so I am quite excited now. I really like this immensely entertaining franchise and it goes without saying that this new entry will be just as fun and as crazy as its predecessors.
6. Thor: Love and Thunder
The storyline in this movie sounds interesting, though potentially too ambitious. But simply having Taika Waititi back in the directorial duty will help make this movie better than it otherwise could be. Thor as a character has finally become memorable and super funny, so let’s hope that this sequel is just as funny and as terrific as ‘Ragnarok’.
5. Mario Movie
I am a big Mario fan, so of course I am excited about the prospects of this movie. Yes, Illumination is hit-or-miss, but still it got the blessing of the game’s creators, so I am quite happy with that outcome. I just hope it has a solid story and that it makes use of its iconic world properly.
4. Knives Out 2
I adored ‘Knives Out’ back in 2019. It was one of my favorite movies of that year, so it goes without saying that I’m excited for the next movie. Netflix is apparently planning a trilogy and they invested an enormous amount of money into it, so color me intrigued. Let’s hope that Craig is as funny here as he was before.
3. The Batman
I disliked Nolan’s trilogy so much and I did not care for Affleck’s rendition all that much, but this could be a return to form for this iconic character. Pattinson is a competent actor and he will undoubtedly be great in the role, but judging by the trailers, The Batman finally looks like it’s going to be faithful to the comics’ tone and style.
2. The Northman
Robert Eggers is an immensely talented filmmaker and I loved his previous movie to pieces, which is why I am so excited for his next project that sounds very interesting judging by the fascinating premise. I expect another very artistic and cinematic endeavor. It’s by far the most anticipated indie project of the year for me.
1. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore
It goes without saying that as a huge Potterhead, I am ecstatic for the third Fantastic Beasts flick. The trailed looked super promising and the poster looks incredible. I can’t wait to see the return of Hogwarts and Fawkes. I do not care about all the drama with Depp and Rowling, I just want a strong addition to this incredible franchise and I am finally hoping to see the backstory of Dumbledore done properly and extensively.
Honorable Mentions:
Uncharted – 2022 is undoubtedly going to be huge for video game adaptations. If done right, Uncharted could be the next Indiana Jones and a better one, so let’s hold our hopes for that.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 – I really enjoyed the first Sonic movie, so I am excited for this more expansive second one. And we are getting my favorite series’ character here – Tails!
Nope – Jordan Peele is a horror auteur who did two very strong movies, so of course I cannot wait to see this next project of his, though more is yet to be revealed about it.
