Top Ten Mega Man Robot Masters
The Mega Man series is iconic for its bosses, in particular the Robot Masters. These robots are present in each and every game and are known for their powerful weapons and interesting attack patterns. This is my list of ten best Robot Masters in the mainline series’ run along with some honorable mentions. I made sure to include all of the twelve games at least in one or two placements, so here we go.
10. Metal Man – Mega Man 2
One of the hardest and most unique bosses in Mega Man 2 definitely is Metal Man. This guy throws blades at you like crazy, so you have to avoid him while shooting him constantly. The fight stage is also interesting for featuring this conveyor that makes it difficult to get close to the boss. It is a boss that is unlike no other in terms of concepts, so it had to get on this list.
9. Burst Man – Mega Man 7
The first and certainly not the last Mega Man 7 Robot Master on this list, Burst Man is immensely difficult to beat, but damn was this battle fun to play. He fires balloons carrying bombs at you. If the bombs fall, they get activated, so you have to avoid them. If the balloon catches you, you can end up on the spiked ceiling. This made the fight extremely difficult as you have to avoid both the top and the bottom dangers while finding the time to shoot at the guy. It’s an extremely underrated boss from this underappreciated gem of a game.
8. Pump Man – Mega Man 10
Mega Man 10 had some truly amazing bosses, so no list would be complete without at least some of them included. Pump Man is among the best as he fits his stage theme perfectly with his water weapon while being perfectly conceived as seemingly easy, but very hard when you think about it. It was quite fun battling this Robot Master.
7. Flame Man – Mega Man 6
Flame Man is the best Mega Man 6 Robot Master in a game that is mostly weak, but its saving grace surely were the bosses. This is the best fire-type robot in the series as his flame attacks are very well executed and they make for a fight that is neither too hard nor too easy, but just right. The bottom flames here, though, can be rather tricky to evade.
6. Aqua Man – Mega Man 8
Pump Man was a great boss, but it is Aqua Man who is the finest water-type Robot Master in the series’ run. Mega Man 8 is another wildly underrated game that featured some terrific bosses and Aqua Man was the best of the bunch. His attack patterns are quite varied and the effects are visually dazzling, which are the two prime reasons why he ranks above the aforementioned dude.
5. Blade Man – Mega Man 10
Not only is Blade Man superbly designed and very cool, but his blade weapon is powerful and badass. Even better is his interesting attack pattern, basically mimicking a spider climbing walls. All of this resulted in one highly engaging, unique boss fight and a further proof that Mega Man 10 is among best installments when it comes to the Robot Masters themselves.
4. Ring Man – Mega Man 4
Most of Mega Man 4 bosses are simple yet very well realized. Ring Man is no exception. This Robot Master fires these rings at you that get sent back to him in boomerang fashion. This made for a very interesting and difficult battle. He is also very well designed. Skull Man usually gets all the love when it comes to the fourth entry, but I prefer Ring Man myself.
3. Shade Man – Mega Man 7
Mega Man 7 is overall the greatest Mega Man game when bosses are concerned and the best of them all has to be Shade Man. He is literally a robotic vampire bat that flies downward from the ceiling and if you are unlucky enough to get caught, he sucks your energy while replenishing his own health bar, effectively stealing your energy. This was a highly unique concept that is different than any other Robot Master in the series and for that he gets the deserved third spot.
2. Jewel Man – Mega Man 9
The greatest Mega Man 9 Robot Master and the second best in the entire series is Jewel Man, a highly underrated gem of a boss, pun intended. Fittingly enough, he fires diamonds at you, but the way he does that is very unique and his pattern requires a lot of trial and error to properly get a read on. Of all these bosses, this is by far the most entertaining fight that I’ve had and for that it deserves the runner-up placement.
1. Flash Man – Mega Man 2
Both Mega Man and Mega Man 2 are my favorite games in the series, but let’s face it, the bosses in these two games weren’t the greatest as they mostly stood in place or had limited movements. Flash Man, however, is different. This Robot Master changed the game literally by being much more brisk and aggressive. He follows you wherever you go, making for a tough opponent. Couple that with a uniquely designed boss stage and you’ve got the best Mega Man Robot Master of them all.
Honorable Mentions:
Gravity Man – Mega Man 5 – The fifth game had some cool bosses, but the best one is Gravity Man due to changes in gravity that made the fight cool and inventive.
Magnet Man – Mega Man 3 – The best Mega Man 3 Robot Master is Magnet Man due to his interesting weapon that pulls you in like a force, making for a fun, difficult battle.
Sword Man – Mega Man 8 – Such a cool boss, Mega Man 8’s Sword Man looks incredible and his diverse attacks made for a wildly entertaining battle.
Fire Man – Mega Man – The best and coolest Robot Master from the original game has to be Fire Man as his fire attacks are imposing and very well executed.
Drill Man – Mega Man 4 – Drill Man is a phenomenal Mega Man 4 boss that digs underground and you have to be careful following his movements and unique attacks patterns.
Slash Man – Mega Man 7 – Slash Man isn’t the best Mega Man 7 boss, but he is one of the best due to his instantly iconic anime-inspired looks and a fantastic weapon.
Impact Man – Mega Man 11 – The greatest Mega Man 11 Robot Master, Impact Man is extremely difficult due to his immense speed and powerful attacks, but he’s a lot of fun to fight.
Ground Man – Mega Man & Bass – Ground Man is rather similar to the above Robot Master and he’s the only really memorable boss from this rather lackluster installment.
