Top Ten Film Posters of 2024

2024 was a very good year for movies, but the purpose of this list is not to promote best movies, but their posters. I chose these images either on artistic or marketing merits. Whether they sold their movies well or were just cool in their own way, these are the best film posters of the year.

10. MaXXXine

The most underappreciated poster on this list is the one for MaXXXine. This is a solid flick that is the weakest in its trilogy, but the poster perfectly encapsulates the main character and the industry she’s working in. All of the posters for this movie are quite strong, but the one that is a portrait of the protagonist from behind with the lights above her is the best one.

9. Megalopolis

I did not love this movie, but this list is about best posters, not best movies, and certainly Megalopolis has an amazing poster. The one with all the main characters is lackluster, but the one where Adam Driver’s character seems to be hanging above the edge of the building is so striking. The imagery is cool and the color choices of the background are pleasing to the eye.

8. Gladiator II

The Gladiator II poster is instantly memorable and is a great hook for the movie itself. Paul Mescal’s character kneeling and mixing sand in his hands, the sword beside him and the arena above him perfectly corresponds to this franchise’s dusty and action-oriented feel. It’s both contemporary and quite timeless.

7. Nosferatu

This film is a sumptuous feast for the eyes, so it was only fitting that it got great posters to boot. It’s difficult even to choose as all of them are great. The one with the shadowy figure on the stairs is naturally terrific and the one with the figure of the vampire being all menacing is striking too. But the highlight is the one where he touches the woman’s face with his long fingers, deftly fitting the main theme of sexuality in the film’s text.

6. Civil War

I did not love this movie, but the poster perfectly captures not just the title, but the content itself. The hand holding the torch embodies the troubling times brewing in the US, the country where political polarization is becoming worse and worse each year. It’s one of the best and most symbolic posters of the year.

5. Nickel Boys

Nickel Boys was shot in first person, which made the movie highly unique. Thus, it was only fitting that its poster would emphasize that unique cinematographic choice. It captures the best moment in the film, the one where the two protagonists look above and see each other’s reflections. It made for excellent imagery in the movie and on the poster itself.

4. Challengers

I do not love this poster as much as others due to Zendaya not being as pretty on it as she is in real life, but it’s still the most iconic poster of the year, so it deserves a high placement on this list. The portrait of her character watching her “boys” play tennis embodies the spirit of the movie so well and it’s instantly recognizable.

3. Queer

Luca Guadagnino movies surely get the best posters as exemplified by both of his movies landing on this list. Queer is the better of the two as it has three strong posters. One with the legs intertwined is very memorable. One with the hand on the back is very sensual. And the highlight is the one with the centipede on the male neck. That one is both sexy and striking.

2. Alien: Romulus

Rare are movie posters done in the color red, so Alien: Romulus gets this very high placement mostly because of that very authentic choice. This color fits the film’s tone of impending danger so well. The facehugger enveloping the person’s head made for instantly chilling imagery. It’s by far the coolest poster of 2024.

1. Hundreds of Beavers

And the best poster of the year belongs to Hundreds of Beavers, which is also one of the best movies of the year. This silent comedy hidden gem was a delightful watch for me and I am glad that it also got such a memorable poster. It depicts the beavers rushing toward the protagonist, who is escaping at the bottom of the image. The font and the color of the title was perfect while the style of the poster perfectly embodies a bygone era in cinema. It’s quaint and vintage in the best way possible and the one poster from 2024 that I will remember for years to come.

Honorable Mentions:

Wicked – Most people love the whispering poster most, but I prefer the one where the two are reaching each other’s hands. That one perfectly contrasted the pink with the green color.

Anora – Anora got two strong posters. The romantic one is quite memorable while the portrait one is more striking and artistic.

Nightbitch – Speaking of portraits, this one is terrific. The movie itself is quite underrated and the poster captures Amy Adams’ distraught feelings so well.

Look Back – I adore this poster. It’s not the most artistic of the bunch as it’s just a look inside the protagonist’s room, but that room is littered with charming collectibles, so it’s delightful.

Sometimes I Think About Dying – The main character lying on the ground inside this foggy forest made for such a moody image that deftly accompanies this strange indie flick.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes – This franchise always gets great posters and this one is no different. The post-apocalyptic background coupled with the ape riding a horse and carrying an eagle made for instantly recognizable and cool imagery.
