Top Ten Film Posters of 2020
2020 was the pandemic year, so obviously there weren’t a lot of big blockbuster movies released. That led to an increased number of indies hitting the streaming services, so the result of that was a wide variety of striking, even artistic poster material. Here are ten best posters of 2020 with five honorable mentions.
10. Dick Johnson Is Dead
Although the movie wasn’t my cup of tea, I cannot deny that this poster is amazing. First of all, it’s instantly memorable and it sticks with you. Secondly, the colors are just right. And the most important thing is the positioning of the bones, the lettering, the plants and his head – everything looks very authentic here.
9. I’m Thinking of Ending Things
The main poster for this great movie is good, but the second one is even better. A woman sitting on a chair inside while being covered with snow evokes fantastical, strange imagery that would define the movie itself. It was the case of perfect marketing.
8. Possessor
I really disliked this movie, but this is a poster ranking, and this one simply had to be included. The screaming distorted face right in the middle of an otherwise very minimalist poster was a perfect choice for this genre movie. Both the yellow and the red variant are terrific.
7. Tenet
I despised Christopher Nolan’s Tenet. It’s by far his worst movie so far. Still, the poster did the trick in marketing the movie well as it is intriguingly SF with the split in the middle being effective at conveying that it’s a time travel flick. It’s quite sleek and cool.
6. Da 5 Bloods
I actually love both posters for this Spike Lee film. Both are different, but they both work. One is this very colorful and instantly memorable artistic piece while the other is this perfectly minimalist take that fits so well with the war movie genre.
5. Palm Springs
The most underrated poster of the year has to be the Palm Springs one. The movie was so much fun and the poster conveys that through the use of sun-drenched colors and the two protagonists memorably seated in the center of the picture.
4. Sun Children
The best part of this Iranian movie lies in the adventure elements. The poster makes use of that as we see the boy protagonist exploring the sewers with his flashlight. His pose and the lighting are both outstandingly realized.
3. Onward
Most poster lists focus just on the artistic side of things, but I also adore just the plain beautiful posters. Onward’s one fits in that latter category. The blue-purple combination is renowned among this marketing material for a reason and the whole imagery here is stunning.
2. Summer of 85
Summer of 85 is a gay movie that features such a simplistic, yet highly effective poster that hints at the highly romantic tone of the movie to come. It is very old-fashioned, but it works all the more for it, and it’s one of those posters that are terrific for any gay person’s wall.
1. Jallikattu
This one is a bit strange in the lettering and the format, but it’s undeniably brilliant at capturing the artistry and the urgency behind this Indian masterpiece that is one of the best movies of the year. The bull running away from horrible humans as they throw spears at him provided an instantly memorable, though brutally dark glimpse into humanity’s worst.
Honorable Mentions:
The Painter and the Thief – While I did find the movie flawed, the poster is wonderfully artistic and the framing of it was excellent of course.
Color Out of Space – The perfectly purple poster to accompany an incredibly purple flick, this poster is a visual overload, but an effective one nonetheless.
Vivarium – I really appreciated this intriguing SF experience and the poster hinted on that with truly powerful imagery on display.
The Platform – The movie about the titular platform fittingly enough included it in the poster material and the result is one of provoking immediate intrigue.
Mulan – One of the rare blockbusters to be released in 2020, Mulan was flawed, but its poster was badass and very cool.
