Top Ten Film Posters of 2017

There have been quite a lot of memorable film posters throughout the year of 2017. Here are my picks for ten best posters including five honorable mentions. I only picked the posters of the movies I’ve actually seen and I looked for those posters which are beautifully colored and instantly memorable while also presenting important imagery from the movie.

10. The Shape of Water

The Shape of Water has an instantly recognizable poster as it comes from the movie’s final scene which is beautiful and very poetic and thus the poster itself shares the same qualities. Seeing this quirky pair in water and floating is bound to stay in your mind for a long time.

9. Logan Lucky

I did not like this film. It is passable entertainment, but shallow and not particularly deep or memorable. However, there is no denying that Logan Lucky’s poster is highly memorable in its position of the characters along with that car. Really well done.

8. Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman’s best poster is the one where she is rushing toward battle. That moment in the film is the best one and naturally the poster where she is reflecting the bullets is also the finest as it portrays her at the peak of her powers. But the kneeling one is also beautiful.

7. War for the Planet of the Apes

Yes, this poster is awkward as it is deceptive in terms of marketing as we never really got the war that it promised us. But still I loved the film and I really love this poster which is beautifully constructed with highly memorable imagery with the ship ruins being particularly intriguing.

6. Goodbye Christopher Robin

This is a wonderful poster for a wonderful, highly underrated movie. It tells us all we need to know about the film which is that it’s highly charming and moving. The city in the background, the tree, the lantern and the father and son walking together – so beautiful.

5. Logan

Logan actually has a lot of terrific posters and choosing the best one is rather difficult. The hands poster is very strong as is the sunset one which is gorgeous in color, but my favorite one is the one with Laura and Logan both in action mode with the villains in the background.

4. Annabelle: Creation

I just love this poster. The girl holding the lantern and ready to throw the doll in the well is such an iconic imagery from this highly underrated, terrific horror feature which surprised me how strong it is. This poster couldn’t have been better for this particular film.

3. Kong: Skull Island

Kong: Skull Island features some of the best camera work and special effects of any 2017 movie and this poster emphasized that accordingly – Kong with the sun behind him, soldiers approaching him in the river and the helicopters flying all lead to one unforgettable poster.

2. Thelma

This is actually the most simplistic poster on this list, but that is why it works so well. Thelma is a flawed, but highly intriguing movie and the poster itself intrigues you instantly with the dead bird splattered against the girl’s face. Highly effective in its simplicity.

1. Icarus

This list is about the quality of posters and not movies and thus the film I didn’t love ended up taking the number one spot. Yes, Icarus is a very uneven documentary about doping, but its poster is anything but – the red color is different and interesting, the yellow colored words are a great choice and just the hands controlling the sportsman as a puppet is a perfect metaphor and imagery for the entire film. It’s instantly recognizable and thus the best 2017 film poster.

Honorable Mentions:

The Lost City of Z – The jungle imagery of the entire movie is well conveyed in this wonderful and highly effective poster too.

Napping Princess – This tech-oriented anime is very cool and exciting and the poster is the same. The colors are appealing and the scenery is intriguing.

Mary and the Witch’s Flower – The same goes for this anime. The fantasy elements are well incorporated here with the magic school in the background being highly intriguing.

The Florida Project – This is a simple poster, but it gives us the wonderful protagonist of this moving film running in that highly unforgettable, beautiful finale.

Ingrid Goes West – Ingrid Goes West is a gem of a film and the poster is very good also. It gives us all the characters along with cool colors and a solid positioning of the phone in the middle.
