Top Ten Cher Songs
Cher isn’t just a pop music icon, but one of the rare singers who adapted to growing times effortlessly, delivering hits from the sixties all the way to the current era. Thus, for this list I was trying to focus on all the different periods of Cher’s discography and the result is a very eclectic top ten with some strong honorable mentions as well. So here we go.
10. Just Like Jesse James
Coming in at the tenth place is this highly underrated song from her 1989 album. Just Like Jesse James is one of her most eighties-sounding numbers with a pleasingly upbeat tempo, solid lyrics and a particularly great refrain.
9. Half-Breed
Not one of my favorite Cher songs, but still one of the essential numbers in her repertoire. The lyrics here tell about the singer’s mixed race (the singer herself is half Armenian) and the Native American imagery and folk sound made the song quite unique and interesting, though far from one of her most entertaining numbers.
8. Dark Lady
Dark Lady is one of the Cher songs from the seventies. This dark magic-inspired number has silly, but fun lyrics. It’s one of the most purely enjoyable and catchy songs from this otherwise lesser period in Cher’s discography. It is still very entertaining, even if it feels very much of its time.
7. Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves
This is one of the most renowned Cher songs and for a good reason. Its folksy tone is very inspired and unique while the refrain is quite catchy and memorable. This period is still not as fun or as timeless as the later decades would be for Cher, but it and this particular song were important for selling the audience on the power of Cher’s vocals and her uniqueness as an artist.
6. Song for the Lonely
This 2001 Cher number is immensely underrated. It is one of her fastest and most energetic songs and for that alone it deserves more attention. It’s such a fun song that is one of Cher’s most modern efforts. It signified just how good this underrated album really was.
5. I Hope You Find It
Now we arrive to what is Cher’s most underrated song of all time – the wonderful I Hope You Find It. Closer to the Truth as a whole is an underrated gem of an album and this is its best number. Why it’s not respected more is beyond me. This song felt both modern and old-fashioned in its mix of pop and country vibes, thus it feels like a perfect song from an artist who has always adapted to different eras. It’s a romantic, gorgeously sung number that features one of Cher’s finest vocals and one of her best refrains.
4. Strong Enough
1998’s Believe is obviously the most iconic Cher album of them all and Strong Enough is the second best song from it. This is a terrific song that is superbly sung by the talented singer, but it also benefits from powerful, inspirational lyrics and an irresistibly catchy chorus. You really cannot go wrong with this one, so it gets this very high placement on this list.
3. I Found Someone
Admittedly, the non-chorus parts of this song aren’t the most memorable ones, but what a refrain this is! When you think about the glorious eighties music, you pretty much think about a song like this one. 1987’s I Found Someone has that signature pop rock sound from this decade and it also benefits from incredible vocals from Cher and once again an unforgettable main chorus.
2. If I Could Turn Back Time
It was difficult choosing between the above entry and this one for the second place, but eventually I had to go with If I Could Turn Back Time for the runner-up spot in this ranking. This one has it all – a gorgeous 80s beat to it, superb Cher vocals, very moving, timeless lyrics and what is probably the singer’s most iconic music video accompanying it. It is one of the songs that will stand the test of time the most on this list and fittingly enough given the lyrics.
1. Believe
There is no other way to go for the number one than with Believe from the titular 1998 album. This was the year when Cher returned and she did it big time. This song is by far her best, most iconic and most memorable number. It has typical, cheesy lyrics, but they are transcended with phenomenal singing and such an unforgettable, infectious beat to it and a unique for the time dance and electro tone. This was one of the first big songs to utilize the auto-tuning effect and do it so effectively. It showed us how Cher could adapt to growing times and always remain relevant, and for that alone it deserves the top spot on this list.
Honorable Mentions:
My Love – A very underrated song that is familiar, but beautifully sung and very sweet in its lyrics. Closer to the Truth is one of Cher’s most underappreciated albums for sure.
All I Really Want to Do – This is one of the most memorable and catchy Cher songs from the sixties as it very effectively encapsulated the appeal of that decade in music.
Bang Bang – Another strong 60s outing with a particularly infectious sound in its chorus. It’s a very memorable song for sure.
Alive Again – An extremely underrated 2001 number, Alive Again has one of the most infectiously catchy refrains of any Cher song. It’s so much fun and it deserves more attention.
We All Sleep Alone – This song doesn’t just have that gorgeous 80s feel that we all know and love, but it also features very moving, touching lyrics and Cher’s powerful vocals.
