Hic-cup Pup (1954)
Hic-cup Pup Review
Hic-cup Pup is a 1954 animated short that is the 82nd Tom and Jerry cartoon. It is a solid and at times brilliant, but ultimately tired entry.
Yes, I have to be honest and state that I am by this point pretty tired of Spike and Tyke. The shorts starring them are not only overly abundant by now, but they also rarely differ from each other as they rely on an established formula. This entry is no exception. Once again we get Spike trying to protect his son, this time his sleep. And the cat and mouse are chasing and it is up to Tom to stay silent. Yep, this is clichéd.
But what it lacks in originality, it more than compensates in creativity with a couple of brilliant scenes. First off, that ending is different and this is probably the first time that Jerry not only lost, but also had to flee town. That was unexpected and refreshing. But the highlight is Tom as his troubles lead to many great moments with the scene in which he puts the headphones on the dogs and then screams in pain being such a standout scene, both inventive and hilarious.
