How do you make a Tom and Jerry film in 2021? Well, by basically destroying the original concept to pieces and making it “hip and cool” so that the youngsters will get it. How many times are we going to see Hollywood tarnish the reputation of a beloved cartoon franchise like this? This needs to stop already.

The duo arrive at a hotel where Chloe Grace Moretz and Michael Pena work. They expect a glorious wedding of two rich people, so the cat and mouse clearly cause a problem for the hotel’s reputation. Yes, this is one of those movies where most of the picture isn’t even concerned with the titular characters, but they are just some additional characters who pop in there from time to time without making a significant impact on the story itself. Very disrespectful.

I do like both Moretz and Pena as both are clearly talented and likable actors, but in this movie they were very badly cast, especially Pena who isn’t funny at all nor is he goofy enough. Why you would put a fun actor in such a thankless role is beyond me. As for Moretz, she is good as she always is, but her role is problematic for children to look up to as she is very manipulative and deceiving. And the less said about that wedding couple, the better.

As for the cat and mouse, they are fine. Actually, whenever they are on screen, the movie at least brought back some of the magic from the past. The decision to portray all animals in cartoon form while the surroundings and people are live-action was an interesting choice that resulted in the animals destroying these real environments in a rather entertaining manner.

This Tom and Jerry is definitely fine in the depiction of the two and they are fun together, but the ending where they connected and united was awful and unlike anything in the original series. The worst offender is the soundtrack. Wow, was it horrendous. Ditching the classical music for modern rap was a terrible idea and those talking pigeons narrating the movie like the children watching it are dumb was just atrocious.

2021’s Tom and Jerry is a terrible movie. Although the two are fun together and the mixing of live-action and animation is solidly done, they are the supporting characters in their own movie, which was a horrible choice by the filmmakers. What they did here was entirely tarnish the concept of the original cartoon series – the ending was all wrong, the human characters are so bad and the movie is pandering toward children in the worst ways possible. The worst offender is the soundtrack. They ditched the series’ signature classical music in favor of atrocious modern rap and that is where I personally drew the line.
