Titane (2021)

Titane Movie Review
Titane is a 2021 French horror film directed by Julia Ducornau and starring Agathe Rousselle. It is a bad, tasteless movie with no point to it whatsoever.
Titane is about a woman who, after being injured in a car accident as a child, has a titanium plate fitted into her head. She then proceeds to have sex with a car (yes, that actually happens in this freaking movie), which leads to her giving birth to the car baby in the final scene. The rest of the movie sees her go on a killing spree and start a particularly uncomfortable relationship with an older man.

The two have such a problematic, disturbing dynamic in this movie that really bothered me. Even worse, none of these characters are well realized whatsoever apart from their insanity. While I did obviously catch the transgender metaphors, I also found it not really about that issue when all is said and done. If it were, they would have done a much better job depicting it or making a clearer statement about it.
This is one of those movies that showcase just how insane the French are. It continues my opposition toward their movies as the country has a tendency to produce films that are strange just for the sake of being strange. But this one is even worse as it was not just weird, but genuinely tasteless in its horrible imagery.
I am not gonna lie, I did find the movie wildly entertaining in those crazy moments, but I also found myself watching in disbelief, disgust and befuddlement, so ultimately it did not appeal to me as it was borderline pornographic content with too much nudity, grotesque imagery and ridiculous sexual scenarios.
Titane does look strong visually and it’s a kinetic movie for sure. The central acting performance is also excellent and quite committed, but still I feel horrible for what this poor actress was put up to do for this terrible movie. The director is to blame and even worse the Cannes Film Festival for actually giving it the top prize. But just the lack of a clear message is what cements this movie as an utter, preposterous failure.
