The Pirate Fairy Movie Review
The Pirate Fairy is a 2014 animated fantasy film from Disneytoon Studios. It’s the fifth entry in the Tinker Bell series and one of the best.

And I don’t even like oysters“

Tinker Bell and her friends go in search of a wayward fairy who fled Pixie Hollow and joined up with a band of scheming pirates led by the future Captain Hook. I really liked this entry for multiple reasons, but the major strength is the tie-in to the original ‘Peter Pan’. For a character that sprang from that famous Disney movie, Tinker Bell never really felt like she came from the world of the original. Here, they change that by tying it all up and the results are quite amusing.
I really liked James Hook, played so well by Tom Hiddleston. This is a very good origin story for Captain Hook with the crocodile and even Mr. Smee appearing later down the line. Again, these references made me quite happy as a Disney classics fan.
The overall story isn’t the greatest, but I did like the new character Zarina who is very well developed and she has an interesting arc. The problem is that she got so much focus that she stole the spotlight not just from the other fairies, but also from our own heroine Tink who is here very underutilized, which was unfortunate. But the friendship between these fairies was wonderful to witness.

Clearly the animation has improved consistently since the first movie. The Pirate Fairy truly looks terrific, especially the costumes and the hair. The hair on Zarina is particularly impressive. The character designs are solid and the entire world is wonderfully realized. The world building is strong here, but the soundtrack is forgettable, the humor is so-so and the midsection of the movie is very forgettable and bland.
