The Mice Will Play (1938)
The Mice Will Play Review
The Mice Will Play a is a 1938 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is such a messy short.
I have rarely seen this messy of a Merry Melody. Why is it this troublesome? Well, because it doesn’t know what it wants to be and it throws too many plot points in the mix and makes it very odd to watch. It starts off as a lab story, then it goes to the wedding and we even get a musical number all of a sudden and then finally the cat comes in. That was just too much and the film thus felt rushed and underdeveloped.
The first half is dull and not my favorite. The second one definitely has its moments. The song is solid, but pointless. The characters are sweet, but typical. And the cat is great with his last line being so funny and perfectly closing the cartoon. I wish the rest was as funny, but it was boring. And the animation is certainly not up to part with the series’ best works.
The Mice Will Play is an oddly structured, messy cartoon with too many plot points going on, but at least the last line is hilarious.
My Rating – 3.3
