The Hot Air Salesman (1937)
The Hot Air Salesman Review
The Hot Air Salesman is a 1937 animated short film from the Betty Boop series. It is a very forgettable cartoon.
A door to door salesman visits Betty Boop’s home with a long line of useless household gadgets. The salesman in question is Wiffle Piffle, who is this very odd cartoon guy that fits in terms of design with this series, but he wasn’t really necessary to include when all is said and done. Grampy himself would have sufficed as he was perfect for this story.
Betty was only okay here while Wiffle has his moments, but overall he needed more characterization. The animation is stellar and some gags centered on the vacuum cleaner really worked and were quite inventive. It’s just that most of the gags are just fine with the movie feeling too familiar to the previous entries.
The Hot Air Salesman has some solid gags and nice animation, but an odd central character and a familiar plot.
