The Horseradish Story (1953)
The Horseradish Story Review
The Horseradish Story is a 1953 Disney comic book written and drawn by Carl Barks. It is a pretty good Uncle Scrooge comic.
Scrooge has to find horseradish that his ancestor failed to deliver to another man that is now suing Scrooge and can take his entire inheritance. This leads to the ducks to embark on an adventure to find the titular horseradish. This story did not end in a particularly interesting way as it was abrupt and disappointing, but the beginning saw a terrific setup and the adventurous elements were wonderful.
The highlight was the Swindle McSue character and the glimpse into the past of the Scrooge family line. These period piece moments made for an epic story that really deserved a two-issue treatment in my opinion. The illustrations are gorgeous and the dialogue is pretty good.
There is a second story in this particular comic that revolved around Scrooge’s money being converted from coins into paper and the Beagle Boys trying to swindle him. It was a fun enough story that had some very funny moments, but it was far from original and it could have been much stronger overall.
