The Herring Murder Case is a 1931 animated short film from the Talkartoons series.

The Herring is murdered and detective Bimbo is trying to find his killer. This is one of the most unique entries in this series as it functions as a murder mystery, but with the added cartoon logic and fun musical elements. While the overall movie is nowhere near as great as it easily could have been with some stronger gags and a better structure, it’s still among the better Talkartoons out there.

Bimbo got his final design in this film while Koko the Clown got his first vocal role. Both are a lot of fun and the villain is also terrific. I liked that we knew who the murderer is from the start and the flick was still quite a lot of fun. The animation is excellent and the score is a delight throughout.

The Herring Murder Case is a fun Talkartoons short that has a kinetic energy to it and a solid premise that was mostly very well executed.
