The Dragon Prince Season 7 Review

The seventh season of The Dragon Prince premiered on Netflix in 2024. It the weakest one so far, though it still has its moments.

The Mystery of Aaravos arc has always been inferior to the first Viren arc, but at least Season 6 promised better things to come. The heroic death of Viren and the villain’s tragic origin story made this season the best from this entire arc. But this seventh season ruined all of the potential promised from its solid predecessor due to many very bad decisions taken by the writers.

I found the treatment of Callum and Rayla troublesome here. They were before this season the most important characters of the bunch, but here they were saddled with uninteresting storylines and were mostly forgotten about, which was a real shame. Callum never going dark and Rayla never doing anything of substance was quite problematic for me.

They instead focused on Ezran way too much and this character assassination was quite horrendous. What was before a naïve boy and a pacifist king turned into a ruthless ruler of sorts who is bent on revenge. It did not make any sense and this change in personality made him quite unlikable and unrealistic.

They also failed to properly develop the animal characters. Bait and Zym are as adorable as ever, but the former speaking his first line only as a side gag in the finale was a wasted opportunity. The dragons were depicted as brave, heroic and powerful, but we barely got to meet them, so what happened to them toward the end failed to register emotionally.

The Sun Elves are just as uninteresting as ever while Terry also acted hypocritically at times, though he was as sweet and likable as always. Soren got to do nothing in this season while too much emphasis was put on Rayla’s parents. Claudia is still one of the highlights. Her arc also did not make too much sense here, but at least she was as badass and menacing as ever.

As for Aaravos, the less said about him the better. I found him to be quite incompetent and overly weak throughout this season, which was a real shame as he was promised to be this incredibly strong villain that never got to be. His voice and his look were still terrific, but his actions were puzzling this time around.

The first half of this season was overly childish and slow in pace, which did not make it feel as the last season whatsoever. But then they overcorrected and delivered in the final two episodes with so much epic spectacle, which was a bit overwhelming and frenetic. I liked some of the action quite a bit, but strong character moments and emotional engagement were on short supply in this installment. The animation and score are better than before, but the dialogue left a lot to be desired.

The final season of The Dragon Prince did not feel as if the show is concluding at all due to its cliffhanger ending. The final two episodes were frenetic, but epic and memorable. The remainder of the season is slowly paced and rather dull. Aaravos was disappointing villain here while Ezran and Callum were highly mistreated by the writers. This season is full of plot holes and contrivances, which made it by far the worst one in the show’s run. I like this series for what it is, but it is clear that the writers did not give it their all, and as the show progressed, it became weaker and weaker, eventually ending on such a whimper.

Worst Episodes: The Glittering Bones and Inversion.

Best Episodes: Unfinished Business and Dying Light.

My Rating – 3.5
