The Cagey Canary (1941)
The Cagey Canary Review
The Cagey Canary is a 1941 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a very strong short.
Finally, finally we get a terrific Merry Melody after a strong string of mediocre efforts. This is a very respectable rebound for the studio and I hope that they continue on this route. So this movie is basically a precursor to Sylvester and Tweety cartoons as it features a cat who tries to eat a bird who chirps anytime the cat is close and thus alerts their owner.
I found the premise quite strong and the style and execution similar to Tom and Jerry is of course magnificent. The only problem is the ending which is a disappointment after the previously excellent build up. But the animation’s strong and the action is particularly phenomenal here as it’s so well executed and quite entertaining.
The Cagey Canary definitely is a great return to form for Warner Bros. thanks to memorable characters and particularly terrific action sequences.
