Steven Universe Season 5 Review

The fifth and last season of Season Universe has its repetitive qualities, but it manages to wrap up the overall storyline very effectively.

I did like this season pretty much the same way I liked the previous one as they are of similar quality. There are many great episodes to be had here, but also some weak ones. And as I said above, the problem here is that the show got repetitive.

It showed too many times Rose’s flashbacks, the conflict with the Gems and simply this whole arc, though intriguing, can sometimes get overly explained which is not necessary as sometimes mystery is a better approach in my opinion.

Dewey Wins is one of the worst examples here of weak episodes as it features a character I do not care about and he is never any necessary for the show overall which is a big problem as it stalls its progress. Letters to Lars is also unremarkable and annoying whereas Escapism was an egregious trip to Watermelon Island when we’ve got the major finale looming ahead of us.

But The Trial is by far one of the greatest episodes this show has ever produced. The trial of Steven/Rose Quartz is impressively animated and thrilling to behold while it raises some great questions in the process and also terrific mysteries. It’s the show at its most sophisticated and complex in terms of arcs and canon.

Reunited is a wonderful queer episode that features the reunion of Sapphire and Ruby into Garnet. Their relationship is beautifully explored here and that led to a great lesbian wedding. I also loved the first part of Change Your Mind, though later on it became too action-heavy which was to be expected.

Steven is again very well developed and complex here, and I loved his relationship with everyone else. Pearl is underused, but Garnet is great and of course Amethyst becoming the most responsible of the trio was a great journey. I actually loved Sadie here as she starts her metal band. Those were some great episodes. And the same goes for Lars who basically became a space pirate here. And of course, Blue, Yellow and White are all badass and highly memorable.

Overall, this season is a pretty good conclusion to the entire show. It has its problematic and pointless episodes, but it has a lot of highs with many episodes being downright great, sophisticated and complex. The characterization is the highlight here along with the overall complexity of its arc.

Worst Episodes: Dewey Wins, Letters to Lars and Escapism.

Best Episodes: The Trial, Sadie Killer, Reunited and Change Your Mind.

My Rating – 4
