SpongeBob SquarePants Season 7 Review

The seventh season of SpongeBob SquarePants is another very weak season. This was the point of no return for the show that should have ended when it was stronger.

Tentacle-Vision is far from great. Squidward deserves better. I Love Dancing is more of the same. It’s disappointing that they even couldn’t get his storylines right by this point. Growth Spout is very silly in its plot, Stuck in the Wringer is forgettable, Someone’s in the Kitchen with Sandy is at least somewhat fun and memorable in Plankton’s stealing Sandy’s fur scheme, The Inside Job is also quite intriguing in Plankton’s quest, but Greasy Buffoons is basically a filler.

Model Sponge is been there, done that. Keep Bikini Bottom Beautiful again misuses Squidward by focusing on such a tiresome Squilliam storyline. A Pal for Gary is a familiar pet episode while Yours, Mine, and Mine is a very boring Patrick episode. Kracked Krabs had some promise, but its strong premise unfortunately went nowhere. The Curse of Bikini Bottom is the weakest, silliest Flying Dutchman episode so far while Squidward in Clarinet is another mediocre Squid episode in a season full of them.

SpongeBob’s Last Stand is very mediocre and stupid in its weak story while Back to the Past and The Bad Guy Club for Villains are both annoying superhero episodes. A Day Without Tears, Summer Job, One Coarse Meal and Gary in Love are all not worth talking about more. This is the point in this season where we really reached the bottom of the barrel storylines.

The Play’s the King is also very tiring, Rodeo Daze has some good things in it, but is overall too silly. Granma’s Secret Recipe, The Cent of Money, The Monster Who Came to Bikini Bottom are all forgettable while Welcome to the Bikini Bottom Triangle at least tries to be more adventurous and fantastical. The Curse of the Hex, The Main Drain and especially Trenchbillies are ridiculous and mostly dumb.

Sponge-Cano is weak as is The Great Patty Caper while That Sinking Feeling is sporadically entertaining. Karate Star is another bad-concept episode that doesn’t work, Buried in Time has a better premise, but weaker execution, Enchanted Tiki Worlds looks great, but is otherwise only okay. The Abrasive Side is more solid and engaging, Earworm is silly, Hide and Then What Happens? focuses on the stupidity of SpongeBob and Patrick to solidly amusing results and Shellback Shenanigans is one Gary episode too many in this season that is obsessed with him.

The Masterpiece is actually great. I loved that artwork that Squid did of Krabs and the whole episode is well animated and very fun. Whelk Attack and You Don’t Know Sponge are both too weak, but Tunnel of Glove is at least different and very adventurous. Krusty Dogs is easily the best episode of this entire season as it has a winning premise well executed and such a great role for SpongeBob. The Wreck of the Mauna Loa is spirited in its adventure, but New Fish in Town, Love That Squid and especially very stupid Big Sister Sam are all silly. Perfect Chemistry at least uses Sandy quite well, but overall it wasn’t great.

Overall, I really did not care for this season. It was so mediocre that only a couple of episodes here are memorable and/or great. Others are all very weak and forgettable. The show really took a bad turn in this period.

Worst Episodes: Big Sister Sam, Model Sponge, The Play’s the King and Karate Star.

Best Episodes: Krusty Dogs, Someone’s in the Kitchen with Sandy and The Masterpiece.

My Rating – 3.2
