SpongeBob SquarePants Season 3 Review
The third season of SpongeBob SquarePants is a bit inferior to its predecessors, but it’s yet another great season of cartoon television.

Now, put this tomato in the oven before it spoils“

The Algae’s Always Greener is a pretty good Plankton episode where he gets to be annoyed by SpongeBob and see that it is not so easy being Mr. Krabs. SpongeGuard on Duty is once again a dull Larry episode. Club SpongeBob is one of the biggest classics of this season. The best episodes see Squidward lose his mind and begin to appreciate the gang’s crazy ideas. The storytelling is particularly fantastic here as they packed so much plot into only eleven minutes.
My Pretty Seahorse is a fine, but forgettable pet episode. Just One Bite and The Bully are also not great, though both have their strong moments. Nasty Patty is such a great thriller of an episode with a great twist in the end. Idiot Box is a fantastic imaginative episode where we again get to see the clear differences between Squidward and others who have imagination.
Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy IV is another mediocre segment starring these superheroes while Doing Time offers another great role for Mrs. Puff. Usually her episodes are sparse, but excellent. Snowball Effect is a fabulous Squidward story where he, as always, first is reluctant to initiate in this game, but later down the line becomes obsessed with winning it.

One Krabs Trash has a killer premise so well executed while As Seen on TV is a great SpongeBob episode that sees him become self-important and vain to funny results. Can You Spare a Dime? is superb. Squid loses his job, becomes homeless and SpongeBob brings him in his house, but eventually he starts using the guy to very amusing results. The various ways that he tried to remind him to find a job were hilarious.
No Weenies Allowed is a forgettable Sandy episode in a season that unfortunately made very little use of her character. Squilliam Returns is fantastic. I’ve seen these stories many times before where the protagonist wants to impress his adversary by acting out his life and job, but it was superbly executed across the board with the ending itself being so well conceived. The scenes inside SpongeBob’s head are quite imaginative.
Krab Borg is not that great episode featuring robots, Rock-a-Bye Bivalve is a serviceable nursery episode, Wet Painters makes use of Krabs’ prized dollar possession so well while Krusty Krab Training Video isn’t the best episode of the season, but it does offer us a great look into the inner workings of this restaurant with very amusing narration.

Party Pooper Pants is fine, but it could have been better overall. Chocolate with Nuts is also not that great, but Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy V is among the best segments starring this duo as its story is very entertaining. New Student Starfish is a Patrick being stupid episode that isn’t my cup of tea, but it’s pretty good undoubtedly. Clams is a less memorable dollar episode, but Ugh is a very interesting, different kind of episode that is a two-part segment on the prehistoric versions of our favorite characters. It is fun, colorful and unique.
The Great Snail Race has a fine concept, but the execution left a lot to be desired. Mid-Life Crustacean also had great potential and it is amusing at times, but anti-climactic for sure. Born Again Krabs has a well utilized Flying Dutchman character inside this Dickensian tale. I Had an Accident finally makes great use of Sandy, but the overall storyline is particularly effective for the show’s formula with SpongeBob being superbly utilized.
Krabby Land is a hilarious segment that features Krabs at his most materialistic. Him seeing kids as money providers and one big pile of money throughout was hilarious with some amazing lines of dialogue that cracked me up. The Camping Episode is very funny in the end when the sea bear finally comes and its design is so bad that it is so good, which is usually what I think of the newly introduced designs or live-action segments on the show.

Missing Identity is utterly forgettable, but Plankton’s Army features one of Mr. Krabs’ best manipulations of Plankton ever. The Sponge Who Could Fly is one of the worst episodes of this show so far. It features lame live-action segments and a very tiresome plot. SpongeBob Meets the Strangler is solid, but far from great. Pranks a Lot, though, is very amusing, especially in its embarrassing ending.
Overall, this season of this cartoon has its glaring mistakes and weak episodes for sure, but it has its fair share of amazing, classic and very funny episodes with Squidward and Mr. Krabs clearly being the highlights this time around.
Worst Episodes: The Sponge Who Could Fly and SpongeGuard on Duty.
Best Episodes: Nasty Patty, Idiot Box, Snowball Effect, Can You Spare a Dime? and Squilliam Returns.
