SpongeBob SquarePants Season 2 Review
The second season of SpongeBob SquarePants is another superb season of this show and probably its greatest.

Your Shoe’s Untied is silly and a bit too slight in plot, but fun. Squid’s Day Off is another solid workplace episode whereas Something Smells is a one-joke episode that still works as it was quite well executed. Bossy Boots is a solid look into the relationship between Krabs and his daughter. Big Pink Loser is a solid Patrick-SpongeBob rivalry episode while Bubble Buddy is a particularly original, phenomenal episode that is very imaginative and very unexpected in its ending.
Dying for Pie is more forgettable itself, but Imitation Krabs is another very strong Plankton episode where he had a good plan that still backfired. Wormy is another one of those episodes that start off simply, but then end in a chaotic manner. The show’s at its best when exploring misunderstanding, and here the pacing getting suitably more frantic and the silly disaster arc really made it a winner of an episode.
Patty Hype is a great episode about branding and business. Grandma’s Kisses offers a terrific glimpse into the protagonist’s relationship with his grandma. He’s so endearing here. Squidville is a classic. This episode sees Squidward going off to live with his own kind, but then he finds them boring and too stuck up. It’s an amusing take on how important diversity of personalities is in life.

Prehibernation Week is a very entertaining episode about Sandy’s hibernation, but the better one about it is still awaiting. Life of Crime is a classic that amusingly depicts how childish and naïve SpongeBob and Patrick really are. Christmas Who? is solid for a special episode, but otherwise not all that memorable to be honest. Survival of the Idiots is amazing. Usually all of Sandy’s episodes are great, and this one is no exception. It utilizes the hibernation storyline superbly with the finale being particularly painful and gross.
Dumped is a truly beautiful episode about pet love with Gary probably getting his finest hour here. No Free Rides is incredible! It’s a great episode about morality and conscience and never has Mrs. Puff been better utilized than here. It’s also superbly written, especially in great, very funny lines of dialogue. I’m Your Biggest Fantastic is too nasty and unlikable in its one-off character while Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy III is actually pretty good despite me not caring for these two. That’s because the villain is particularly amusing and memorable.
Squirrel Jokes is a terrific take on insult comedy, Pressure is a superb, highly entertaining exploration of land versus aquatic creatures in this great Sandy-heavy season, but The Smoking Peanut and Shanghaied are not all that great. The first one is forgettable and too simply while the second one could have been more atmospheric, though the ending is very strong. Gary Takes a Bath is also not particularly strong as Gary has seen much better episodes in this season alone.

Welcome to the Chum Bucket is a classic. SpongeBob is forced to work at Plankton’s and he is so miserable and annoying that he ultimately drives the little guy insane. The musical number is fun and the whole episode is superbly crafted on every level. Frankendoodle is a fantastic horror-like episode with this unstoppable force of drawing evil. It plays out so well with every scenario being so much fun.
The Secret Box is a bit anti-climactic, but still amusingly silly in its plot. Band Geeks is a bit overrated as I wouldn’t call it the show’s best episode like many would do. Still though, it’s a great take on Squidward and his career goals with the ending being particularly fun. Graveyard Shift is the most purely atmospheric episode of this season that is very creepy for children and truly excellent in its many horror details that it introduces.
Krusty Love is such a great romantic episode that sets up Krabs with Mrs. Puff with SpongeBob being his helper. It offers a great look into his obsession with money. Procrastination isn’t particularly funny, but it is imaginative. I’m With Stupid is a very amusing episode where Patrick gets the best development so far along with a great storyline. Sailor Mouth should prove very funny to children and quite brave in its handling of curse words.

Artist Unknown is an excellent episode centering on the world of art with Squid again being superbly utilized. Jellyfish Hunter and The Fry Cook Games are both rather forgettable, diminishing the impact of an otherwise amazing season. Squid on Strike isn’t the best workplace episode, but it is very well done and terrific in its ending. Sandy, SpongeBob and the Worm is a great creature feature with perfectly utilized Sandy once again.
Overall, I found some episodes to be weaker here, but most are very strong and some are even amazing in this all-time great SpongeBob season that might be the show’s finest hour. Sandy, Krabs and Squidward are the highlights this time around.
Worst Episodes: Dying for Pink, Christmas Who? and The Fry Cook Games.
Best Episodes: Bubble Buddy, Wormy, Squidville, Survival of the Idiots, Dumped, No Free Rides, Frankendoodle, Welcome to the Chum Bucket and Graveyard Shift.
This is my favorite SpongeBob Season next to Season 3, which to me is the funniest of the 3 seasons.
