Snow-White (1933)
Snow-White Review
Snow-White is a 1933 animated short film from the Betty Boop series. It is the most iconic Betty Boop short.
This short is regarded not just as the best Betty Boop short, but also as one of the greatest animated short films of all time. Although I personally wouldn’t go that far in my assessment, I still admire the film for what it is, which is this highly unique, surreal cartoon that is so crazy and entertaining that it flies by how fun and memorable it is. The animation is absolutely incredible as it effortlessly brings to life all the insane, illogical stuff that happens on screen.
The soundtrack is also phenomenal. This is first and foremost a great musical that benefits from some wonderful moments of Betty singing as well as the final number that is a terrific blues song that fits well with the action on screen. My issue with that sequence is that it was prolonged and it took up too much of the film’s ending. I wished for a different, more eventful ending. But the rest of the short is superb with the highlights being the mirror making fun of the very ugly queen and that scene where Betty gets entrapped in ice. That was gloriously executed and so surreal that it was unbelievable to witness.
