Skull Island Review
Skull Island is an animated adventure television series that premiered on Netflix in 2023. It’s a very well done, but somewhat forgettable show.
In the 1990s, a group of well-meaning explorers venture out to sea to rescue Annie from the ocean. In doing so, they find themselves shipwrecked on the perilous Skull Island. Together, they fight to survive the dangers of the mysterious isle, which is home to large creatures and terrifying monsters, including Kong himself. This was the first television series in the MonsterVerse franchise and it’s a pretty solid one.

The series reminded me of ‘Scavengers Reign’ in this premise of a place that is extremely dangerous and humans trying to survive on it, but this show has more dialogue and isn’t as brutal, though it has its dark moments. The show is at its best when it focused on the adventurous elements as the island was well explored and wonderfully realized.
The animation in Skull Island is quite solid and the character designs appealingly diverse and authentic. The score, sound and overall editing and directing are polished while the voice acting is also top-notch. The action is executed so well with numerous scenes that are pulse-pounding and exciting. The battle and escape scenes made the show so entertaining to watch.
My main issue here was the overall plot that was quite slim and characterization that was even thinner. I did not care for any of these people, so it was difficult to find myself rooting for any of them. The series focused so heavily on this group of explorers that it really needed to better develop them. It was in desperate need of a bigger personality among the crew.

Skull Island is a pretty good animated show that makes great use of its setting through strong animation, wonderful score and excellent action sequences. The series is fun and exciting, but it also had a thin plot and weak characterization, rendering it flawed and forgettable at the end of the day.
Worst Episode: Maritime Pilot.
Best Episode: You’re Not a King, You’re Just a Stupid Animal.
