Shanghaied (1934)
Shanghaied Review
Shanghaied is a 1934 Mickey Mouse cartoon. It is a terrific entry.
Shanghaied follows Mickey and Minnie who are captured by Pete on his ship. It is up to Mickey to save her and fight Pete and his men. The short needed a bit more humor and the first half is better in my opinion, but still this is one of the better entries in the series so far which is so well scored and animated.
I loved its action. There are a lot of memorable moments here such as the ink scene, all of Pete’s laughs as well as that shark ending. Mickey is heroic per usual here, but this is Pete’s moment to shine and he did that wonderfully. He is such a great villain and here he is particularly menacing and highly competent. His constant obsession with Minnie is also pretty creepy and funny in a way. His voice is fantastic and I loved the emphasis on his broken leg in this short.
Shanghaied is an incredibly entertaining entry with terrific animation, many great action scenes, superb character moments and Pete who’s the MVP here.
