Sex Education Season 2 Review

The second season of Sex Education is another strong outing for the series that is largely unrealistic, but undeniably an extremely entertaining pass time.

The second season also has eight episodes, and most are very good. I continue to find this show unrealistic and even silly and manufactured in its drama and relationships, but it’s so fun that I don’t mind. This is a thing with television shows – when they have incredibly developed characters, memorable narratives and a fun tone to them, they manage to make you forget about its many flaws, which is exactly what happened here.

This season is even busier than the first one. It deals with so much drama with so many different characters, old and new, which led to some episodes feeling like one entire season worth of entertainment put into a single episode, and I am all for that brisk pace and engaging storytelling.

I loved everything that they did with Otis here as he is no longer a good boy, but a problematic human being in his own right. The whole issue with his father and that he doesn’t want to be a douchebag like him was very well told, and his failing relationship with Ola was expected, but well executed. I found his will they, won’t they with Maeve obviously familiar, but the whole twist with the wheelchair guy and just how horrendously manipulative he turned out to be in the final sequence was a great way to end the second season and an excellent hook for the next one.

It’s unrealistic as hell for Maeve to be falling a bit for this guy, but at least it made for entertaining television. Her problems with her addict mother made for one very moving subplot that was complex in their tackling of it. Maeve is great for sure. Getting back to Otis, his relationship with his mom was superbly realized and it was emotionally rewarding when they patched things up in the finale.

Gillian Anderson continues to steal the show in the acting department and I just loved her relationship with her neighbor and how that made her into a younger, more insecure woman. This season made her less perfect and that humanizing of her was important in making us care for her, which is exactly what happened to me. That drama with the principal was way too over-the-top and even cartoony in the final episode, but it was, once again, fun as is this whole show.

I still find Jackson boring and the added potential girlfriend of his was the most unrealistic aspect of the entire season, which says a lot really. Ola’s lesbian relationship worked as it was very sweet and endearing. Most of the characters get a moment to shine here, even the supporting ones like that gay Indian guy with that episode about douching being funny, but surprisingly endearing.

That brings me to Eric. He is by far the most engaging and best written character on the show and the love triangle that develops between Rahim and Adam was manufactured, but hugely entertaining. I loved that he ended up with Adam as I found Rahim very boring and somewhat unlikable and arrogant while the whole drama with Adam finally accepting his bisexuality was so well done. The scenes between the two are all lovely.
