Scrap Happy Daffy (1943)
Scrap Happy Daffy Review
Scrap Happy Daffy is a 1943 animated short film from the Looney Tunes series. It is a pretty standard patriotic flick.
The major reason why this movie works more than some other propaganda shorts of course is due to Daffy Duck who’s reliably fun, energetic and at times quite funny too. I loved his madcap energy here and he stole the show in the first and third act in particular. I also found the black-and-white animation quite strong with the character design being very polished.
However, the short is still such a typical overly patriotic movie which uses the word America so much that it really frustrated me. It is also overlong and never as funny as it could have been as it relies so much on topical humor that it’s rather dated nowadays. Americans obviously came into war around this period so it’s no surprise that 1943 proved to be immensely propagandist for Warner Bros.
Scrap Happy Daffy is another unfortunately patriotic flick which does feature excellent, fun Daffy, but a much weaker plot.
