Scoob! Movie Review

Scoob! is a 2020 animated comedy film directed by Tony Cervone and starring Will Forte and Fred Welker. It’s another disappointing Warner Animation Group flick.

With hundreds of cases solved and adventures shared, Scooby and the gang face their biggest, most challenging mystery ever – a plot to unleash the ghost dog Cerberus upon the world. As they race to stop this global dog-pocalypse, the gang discovers that Scooby has a secret legacy and an epic destiny greater than anyone could have imagined.

And there lies the main problem with this movie – it’s just way too silly and familiar in that entire “the destined one” storyline. I really disliked everything that they did with Scooby here as it was so mediocre and unfortunate. He’s funny at times, quite funny in some great lines, but the second half made poor use of him.

Actually, the whole gang is mistreated here, especially in terms of screen time. Most did not get much to do, though everyone is faithfully portrayed from the original animated series. The standouts have to be Dick Dastardly and his dog Muttley. These two are hilarious and such a great pairing with their reunion being both funny and sweet.

The animation is actually terrific. It’s old-fashioned in character designs, but strikingly modern when it comes to its and locations. Some imagery here is quite memorable. It lacks an artistic touch, but it’s serviceable, polished and suitably colorful.

Scoob! Movie Review

Scoob! could have been a great film had it had a better script, but this story is just so mediocre in every way. I’ve had a big problem with its overly modern catchphrases and a particularly annoying insistence on connecting thing to other things, making references and wanting to create another cinematic universe. I love Hanna-Barbera, but their properties deserve much better treatment. The humor is solid at times, but at other times it’s way too childish and silly. The action is also overwhelming, and for a property that is all about mysteries, this one barely qualifies as a mystery story as that’s sidelined in favor of all the action and humor.

While the characters are faithfully portrayed, Dick Dastardly is a lot of fun and some moments are quite amusing, Scoob! is mostly too reliant on action and humor, sacrificing its mystery roots in the process. The animation is great, but the script is mediocre and the film is overly frenetic and messy.

My Rating – 3
