Scaredy Cat (1948)
Scaredy Cat Review
Scaredy Cat is a 1948 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is an odd flick.
It’s odd because it features a pairing of Porky Pig and Sylvester and only the former seems like himself. Yes, Porky is great at being annoyed and slightly irritated, but still a nice person within. But Sylvester not so much at playing a scared cat. This is not him, and unfortunately I could never shake that feeling of him being too different.
I liked the premise and I found the third act solid, but overall the film needed much more humor and more memorable moments. Porky steals the show surprisingly so, and again Sylvester continues to struggle in these years without Tweety. This year thus closes oddly for the studio, and I continue to feel that here they were on the precipice of greatness, but still not quite there.
Scaredy Cat has a very problematic Sylvester, but Porky himself is great. It’s an odd, but fine cartoon.
