Saga Vol. 2 (2013)
Saga Vol. 2 Review
Saga is an epic space opera fantasy comic book series written by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Fiona Staples. The second volume covering issues 7 to 12 was published in 2013.
Continuing right where its predecessor left off, this volume is most important for introducing us to Marko’s parents and that storyline was by far the best and most interesting during these six issues. The whole family dynamic that developed between Alana and her in-laws was lovely – at first fraught and toxic, but ultimately respectful. The father’s death was quite tragic, but also inspiring. I loved his arc and he was such a wonderful character.
We also have The Will rescuing a slave girl that has powers. This was continued from the previous volume and it continues to be a very interesting storyline. The final twist where it is revealed that our protagonists aren’t on a planet, but a hatched egg of a dangerous celestial being was fantastic. The action toward the end was thrilling and so memorable.
I would have liked to have seen a bit more development for the other characters that are a bit sidelined here. Saga continues to be a sprawling, well, saga. It is almost too ambitious for its own sake. But it is epic nonetheless and it is easy to get swept by its artistic and gorgeous illustrations, fun dialogue and amazing world building. Fiona Staples’ visual work is once again incredible while the tone that mixes suspenseful with funny is so well achieved.
